Jul 1, 2016 9:55 AM in response to Alveintby Csound1,Go to Disk Utility and choose Erase, then set the format you need after the erase. Do this from Recovery (CMD-R). But depending on type your backup probably contains the same files as the original, so you will have the same amount of 'Other' after you restore.

The display that shows the OTHER category as well as 'other' items is very unreliable. Often, but not always, a Spotlight reindex will correct it:

If you have a need to know correct information that resides on your MBP, download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective (both free) and open them. They will show all of your files and the respective sizes.

This may be simpler that reformatting the HDD and reinstalling the OSX. Your decision.
