Q: Mid-2010 27" iMac be used as a monitor for a satellite receiver.

I'll soon be getting a new iMac. Can I then use my  mid-2010 27" iMac as a monitor for a satellite receiver, using the HTML/Mini-display adaptor?

    Howdy jaigieese1863,

It's always exciting to get a new Mac! I understand you'd like to find options for your older iMac, specifically as a monitor. You're in the right spot for help with this.

Your older iMac is compatible with Target Display Mode, which means that you can use it as a second monitor for another Mac. Check out this article for details:

Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode

You'll need a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable for your older iMac, and either a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt connection on the other Mac. Note that your iMac will only act as a second monitor for other Mac computers, so iOS devices, Windows computers, and other sources will not be compatible.

    Enjoy your weekend!

Well, that's nice information, and I thank you for it. But it really doesn't address my issue. I'm not looking to use the older iMac as a secondary display for another Mac, or any other computer.  What I want to do is use the old iMac as a monitor for a DirecTV receiver. Apple makes an adaptor to allow an HTML line to plug into the iMac's mini-display port. If I activate Target Display Mode, and use said adaptor, can this older iMac be used to display programming from my DirecTV receiver??

Really?? Never would've guessed that. Now please tell me why it won't work with a satellite receiver. And please do provide some detail as to why this won't work.
