Q: How can I erase all content and settings without password

I just bought this iPad from my friend, when I try to erase all content and settings, it asked me about the password of his Apple ID password. But he already forgot it! So how can I erase everything back to the factory setting, like a brand new iPad, has nothing in it. Please help and thank you very much.

You can't. He will have to give you the password.

    Have him try http://iforgot.apple.com

That is activation lock and cannot be bypassed. He will have to remember his password, or reset it so you can continue with the restore.  There's no way around this as it is an anti theft feature to prevent thieves from being able to use the device. It would be pointless if you could bypass it.

Just keep entering an incorrect passcode until the iphone resets itself.  Then, start using it like a brand new phone.

That will not work.  If he does that he still needs the previous owners iCloud password to active the device after restoring as new in iTunes to reset the disabled passcode.  Activation lock is not disabled by a restore as new in iTunes.

No, it will not.  Once the restore in iTunes is finished, the device will be at the setup screen.  In order to proceed, he will have to enter the previous owners iCloud passcode.  Otherwise, Activation Lock will prevent him from doing anything further.  Until Actication Lock is disabled by the previous owner on that device, nobody is going to be able to do anything on it.

I Just did this on mine.  I entered the passcode too many times on purpose and it reset To factory settings. I was able to go through the prompts and set up as a new iPhone for my daughter.  It let me create her a new Apple ID.  And it works fine.

Then you either did not have find my iPad enabled in your iCloud account settings prior to restoring that device, or you are forgetting that you entered that password when prompted during setup.

The whole point of Activation Lock is to prevent exactly what you are describing, and it is very effective at doing that.

    Hi there Lcallahan79,

Can't you connect your iPad to your Mac/Pc and try to restore it with iTunes or does it ask for your friends apple id password?

    greetings, Rick

No, it does not work that way.  Restoring through iTunes will require the unknown passcode first, and if the iPhone is set to DFU mode and actually resotred it will request the Apple ID used to set up Activation Lock and will go no further.
