Q: iPhone sync is deleting songs from my playlists

Every time I sync my phone to my laptop, it deletes songs from the playlists in iTunes.  I do not have Apple Match or Music and I always sync via cable, never wireless.  I have an iPhone 5 and the most recent version of iTunes.  My MacBook is running 10.11.5 El Capitan.

Once the phone is done syncing, many of the playlists will be missing half their songs.  I'll look at the source playlist on the laptop, and sure enough, they're gone from there as well.

Any ideas what the issue is?

Thanks,  but the songs themselves aren't going away, they're just being deleted from the playlists.  It's as if the sync times out, and the songs that made it to the phone overwrite the source playlist.

I'm having this same issue.  It's almost like the sync fails partway through the playlist and then makes the iPhone and the iTunes versions look the same :-(

I've been un-doing this but keeping an extra copy of my iTunes library in a different location and over-writing the back one multiple times.  I was able to fix my phone by taking off all of the music, re-doing the library from scratch, and then re-syncing.  I've just restored my iPad and am setting it up from scratch but am still running into issues with it :-(

It's almost like I need a setting that says only sync these one direction: always update iPhone to look like iTunes but never the other way around.

I'd be appreciative of any other suggestions to keep this from happening.
