Q: Error while repairing permissions

Just upgraded to the new Photos app, during the 'Preparing Library...' phase I received the following error "An error occurred while repairing permissions"

I rebooted to the recovery console (⌘R during a restart) and ran Disk Utility to repair permissions and repair the disk. After rebooting the same error appears after starting photos.

My console log shows the following:

2015-04-08 5:33:49.369 PM Photos[550]: Attempted pid lock for: file:///Users/jj/Pictures/iPhoto%20Library/, <PLPHgPIDFile: 0x61000024e400>, 1, retries: 3

Anyone else see this already, or know how to report an issue directly to Apple?

Knowing that I had seen thumbnails corrupt in previous versions of iPhoto (I'm now using Photos in Yosemite), I found my Photos library under my user dir and the sub-dir called Pictures. I shift-clicked on it and chose Open Package Contents. This will show you all the files of the photo library "database". Then I found the thumbnails and deleted them. I then launched Photos with Option-Command pressed, and the repair went well.

You'll loose your thumbnails, but photos will detect they are missing and rebuild them. Be patient!

@josho the mac ----- THANK YOU

You put me on the right track by using console to see the problem at hand, wasn't aware of that feature and as a mac newbie this is going to be my favourite goto from now on!

With Console i was able to see I had a problem with iPhoto Faces, this would freeze my photo import session, and all attempts to repair the database would fail. To fix my problem i open iPhoto via view contents, and just deleted the faces folder within ----I don't recommend people just arbitrarily deleting files without using a tool like console.--- Anyways problem solved and my 300+gig of photos are now converting over

    @Mr. Luigi

I own a copy of iPhoto library manager, it did not fix the problem i was seeing after monitoring with console, and for the record i ran a complete repair with the iPhoto library tool. Even the built in repair database tool in iPhoto would not fix the faces issue i was getting

i had this problem over and over.  i deleted the photos app entirely, thinking i could just download another fresh copy.  found out you can't.  it comes with the OS.  got it back when i updated to 10.11  worked for a couple of weeks, then went back to "can't repair permissions" and have to quit out.  so, reading these solutions, i went to restart Photos with Option key down, but actually held down Option and Command keys.  Photos opened and said "about to repair permissions - OK?" had to enter admin password and it started a progress bar.  in my case, it gets to 5% and "can't repair..." comes up again and have to quit out.  Console reports "...Sandbox Error..."  i'm done messing with it for now, but maybe others will have better results.

UPDATE:  I just gave up, held down just the option key and started Photos - it asks what library to use or create New.  I made a new one, it's finding all kinds of photos and importing them.  call it good.

UPDATE to my previous post.  after Photos scanned my drive and found a zillion photos i didn't know were there, it came up with an error message for three photos.  i wrote down the filenames and deleted them.  based on earlier comments for this problem, i'm thinking that previously Photos would open, encounter these bad files, error out and quit. hope this helps someone.

This worked for me. Went to Terminal, navigated to the photos library and changed the owner to me via a chown command.

I suspect that many of us are trying to access an old library on an external drive, created in a past life when we were a different user  .

[change directory to your external drive]

    cd /Volumes/EXT_DRIVE_NAME

[navigate further as necessary to the folder where your photos library is]

    [at the folder, change permissions]

[note that the "\ L" bit  below is the way to handle the space in the filename]

    sudo chown -R MY_USER_NAME Photos\ Library.photoslibrary

[quit terminal, hold the alt/option key while double clicking the Photos icon, choose the library]
