I also tried booting to the recovery partition and running disk utility first aid.
After that, I tried it again. Still same result.

or you could try downloading the update directly and running it.

Also, since the display has to be connected you may want to try a different cable.
I don't own a Thunderbolt display so that's about all I can suggest.

I don't have a Thunderbolt display either.
The update that's causing a hang up is called "Thunderbolt Firmware Update 1.2."

The only devices that I connect are USB. I have never used the Thunderbolt port.
