Make sure your iTunes is the current version (12.4.1 right now).

Use iTunes' menu to go to the leftmost item (is it File in Windows?) > Preferences > Devices > [the corrupt backup].  Click on it and delete it.

    Then try again.

Thanks - iTunes 12.4.1.6 on W7. Have only ever backed up to the Cloud before and getting a new iPad so hence wanting to back up to iTunes to see if can use that to transfer to the new iPad.

There is no backup to delete.

Is this error message saying the backup on the iPad is corrupt?

If so how is that fixed?

There is no backup on the iPad.  There is a backup of the iPad somewhere, either in iTunes, iCloud, or possibly both.

I again suggest attempting to delete either an iTunes backup (which you say does not exist) or an iCloud backup.

If you see neither, then this section of the article I attached above applies.

Ok have now deleted the Cloud backup so as far as know there are NO backups and the error is still there!

Will get the new iPad and try a new Cloud backup to load the settings?

    Thanks

Sure, a "new iCloud backup" of the iPad Mini would be worthwhile - if you can perform it.

    "... to load the settings"???

To what, a brand new iPad?  If not, I don't know what you mean.  If you do mean you're thinking of loading the settings in a brand new iPad, be sure to set it up from iCloud as soon as you take it out of the box.

Ok - purchased a new iPad 2 Air and the store managed to transfer everything over from the iPad Mini - whew!

    Thanks
