Did you install the battery?  If so, what experience do you have with MacBook Pro's that qualified you to do that?

With a defective battery, your friend would probably not have been able to pass it on to you as 're-set to factory condition', which is what it should have been, so it is unlikely an Apple store would repair it.   You can ask, of course but I think you should find a freelance technician (in case you made errors with the installation).   But even doing this, you may be throwing good money after bad.

I own the same MBP and I need to replace my battery also. What settings do you need to reset after installing a NEW battery?....

Are you planning to install the battery yourself?   In your case, if it has not been transferred to you by gift or sale there should be no settings to change other than what replacing the battery may incur.  Apple does not encourage self repairs hence the reason there are no documents covering the operation.    How old is the machine, are you the original owner and do you have an Apple store nearby?

Bring the MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation.  They may be able to assist in defining haor to fix the various issues.

In the interim, try to run an Apple Hardware Test:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

Have you tried a reinstall of the OSX?

    Ciao.
