Q: Mac Pro Early 2008 Kernal Panic with any Nvidia Video Card

About two weeks ago there was a thunderstorm. When I woke up I discovered my computer was a victim. I have 2 video cards in my Mac Pro early 2008, and ATI Radeon 2600 and an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT. After some troubleshooting I discovered the computer would boot with just the ATI card in, but if I had the GeForce card in it would constantly kernel panic. Didn't matter which slot it was in, and it didn't matter which slot the ATI card was in, it worked perfectly fine. So, I assumed my GeForce card was toast. So... I ordered a Nvidia Quadro FX 5600. Installed it, and I'm having the exact same issue. So now I'm thinking it's the OS. So I installed Mac OS 10.11.5 on one of my other internal drives. Same issue when booting to that. If either Nvidia card is in my Mac Pro, the computer KP's.... But put the ATI card in there alone and it boots fine. I made sure I even downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Nvidia for the GeForce card, no luck... What the heck is the issue? Could this be a hardware issue? It seems like that to me but it's just boggling my mind that the ATI card works in the same slot... Below is the crash log if ANYBODY could help me shed some light on this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

I suggest that you remove the Nvidia drivers that you installed and see whether the panics stop. Back up all data before making any changes.

The first boot after installing 10.11 on my other drive was without the new nvidia drivers and it gave the same issue. I then put the ATI card in, installed the nvidia drivers, reinstalled the nvidia card, and again, same issue.

Seems like the thunderstorm either damaged the problem graphics card or another component in the Mac.

I think the 8800 card is failing. Pretty much all of those cards would be expected to have failed by now, as they had poor-quality solder joints.

It can't be just the 8800 card, because the other nvidia card is not working either. I've been running apple service diagnostics on it since last night with the ATI card in obviously and I finally got a failure. Processor 0 failed the whetstone test, concurrent whetstone floating point unit benchmark test. My hunch is the logic board, just seems like the more powerful cards it won't run? Obviously it could be processor 0 but my gut is telling me MLB.

Then it's time to recycle the machine.

Ehhh, I have 4 displays hooked up to this, including a 30inch Cinema Display, I'm not going to just give up and recycle. This computer still has life

Ive repaired dozens of these Mac Pros so I think I may order a logic board off eBay and give it a shot, $90 is worth the gamble. I used to be an Apple tech so it's a doable repair. I'll keep this thread posted on what happens.

The FB-DIMM memory in the 2006-2008 run hot and tend to fail with time.

I would remove all memory except two 2 GB sticks and see if problem persists. If it does exchange those for another pair.

Memory seems like a bit of a long shot but I've seen crazier things affect a computer, I'll give that a shot in a couple hours and let you know. I remember repairing one iMac, wouldn't power on. We replaced the power supply, still no power, then the logic board, still no power. Turned out the HD was preventing the iMac from turning on... Made no sense to me but hey, that's computers for you. I'll keep you guys posted, thanks for all the suggestions so far.
