Q: Black X over battery icon. System shuts down on disconnecting Magsafe power cable. Power cable indicator is always green. Not working with other batteries as well

I have a Macbook Pro mid 2012 Edition. It was working fine until one day, while watching a video, I plugged in my iPhone into the USB port. As soon as I connected the iPhone, the Macbook shutdown. After which, I tried several times to turn it on but it did not turn on. The Magsafe connector's LED indicator light was also not showing any color (green or amber). When I tried to look at the LED indicator under dark, I could see very faint flickering green light.

I searched online about the problem and came across a solution which suggested disconnecting the battery and reconnecting again. I tried the same. Now my Macbook did turn on. I thought problem solved. But the bigger problem had just begun. My battery indicator now had a black colored 'X' icon over it. The Macbook would should down as soon as I disconnected the Magsafe power cable. And the LED indicator would always remain green and never turn to amber.

I tried a lot of things like resetting the SMC, PRAM but nothing worked

Then I took it to a repair shop to get the problem diagnosed. They tried to make it work with another battery but that also did not work. They said there might be a short circuit in the IC connecting the battery with the logic board and it will have to be replaced.

I wanted to see if anybody else has been facing the same problem. So far all the cases I have found online were cases where either the battery was dead and replacing the battery solved the problem, or cases where resetting SMC/PRAM solved the problem. I need help since my Macbook is out of warranty and taking it to Apple might cost me a bomb.

Hardware problem. Get it repaired: Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service. If needed find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple.

Understand that evaluations at Apple store genius bars are FREE regardless of warranty status.

You might run an Apple Hardware Test which might offer a clue:

Note that an error free AHT is not conclusive.

Thanks, but it doesn't work like that in India. There is no Apple store genius bar in my city. There are authorized service centers. They charge $20 for just inspecting the device and diagnosis. And when I explained my problem to them they said it might require replacement of entire logic board since they do not change individual parts of the logic board if it is faulty. The estimate they provided was more than the worth of my Macbook pro. So, visiting them wasn't really helpful for me.

It is most unfortunate that you do not have direct Apple assistance available.  There is the possibility that the DC input board is faulty which would result in a lesser expenditure than the logic board, but that can only be determined by a definitive diagnosis.  Perhaps running the AHT might determine what is exactly wrong, so if possible I would suggest you give that a go.  Aside from that, There is nothing more I can do for you.

    Ciao.
