Q: mismatch connection to an Apple El Capitan Server
Introductory statement:
When Apple released Mavericks they made a change such that if a single server supports both SMB and AFP then the Mac client will 'prefer' using SMB to connect to the server.
Depending on how you try connecting to the server this may result in it automatically picking SMB for the connection. Two ways this is likely to occur are either clicking on a server listed in the left of a Finder window i.e. the 'Sidebar' or when 'browsing' the network.
Yosemite and El Capitan also will automatically prefer using SMB in the same circumstances.
My trouble:
[1 server: Mac Pro Server middle 2012 : Os X v. 10.11.3 (and 10.11.5 on a clean install new partition) + server.app 5.0.15 (and 5.1.5 on a clean install new partition)]
[3 clients: 2 iMac 27 middle 2013: Os X v. 10.11.4 or 10.11.5
+ 1 iMac 21 middle 2011 with osX 10.10.5 (which is not involved by this problem)]
Since I upgraded the mac clients of my network from 10.10 to 10.11 version of mac osx I encounter great difficulties to access the server's volumes.
When I try to get to the server via the sidebar, despite the access server password was stored in keychain, it is further required (no match with ancient address uri?). So I add password again, and send the request and the server responds "Connection Failed".
No more acces to remote volumes via SMB??...
BUT if I go at O.D. password server log, it seems that the authentication process has worked fine:
If however I choose 'Connect to server' from the Connect menu and enter the address specifically as afp://server.xgrafici.private or similar then it should force it to use AFP, and the password saved in my keychain is recognized and volumes proposed and mounted correctly.
What was wrong? All mac with El Capitan are involved. Yosemite, Maverick or older 10.6 still works fine
For instance I bookmarked in the clients user's Sidebar the "afp" volumes more frequently needed, but if they click on the icon server, the same volumes premounted don't appears anymore...
I even reformatted a volume of server mac and clean installed system again and the app server, but the problem still persists
can anyone help me?
Best regards
Mac Pro, OS X Server, mac osx 10.11
