Q: 128 and 256 duplicates tracks

I must have done something wrong as I still have 128 AND 256 versions of my tracks.  What should I do?

    Julie,

The answer is to just delete the ones that you don't want!

How did you get 2 copies of each?

Because I loaded up my library from all my 70s and 80s CDs, plus some iTunes purchases - about 700+ in total. Then I subscribed to iTunes Match, so everything that was available as a 256 version of my 'own' 128 versions got added in as well. So I guess I missed a step in the process ... or was too scared to hit 'Delete'.  I now have everything that I want, so if I unsubscribe to Match will all my 256 stuff disappear.

Sorry to be so dumb - and yes, I am blonde ...

    Hi Julie,

If you want to use iTunes Match to upgrade your old songs, then you need to delete the old version currently in your library, and then download a 256 version into your library.  That is steps 4 through 10 of the document you linked from.

Once you have the new versions, you should also create a backup copy on a USB or external drive.  Thus, you will have the 256 versions on your computer and your backup, so even if you unsubscribe from Match, you will still have them.

The "scared to hit Delete" is a common feeling.      Don't do any mass deletes.  Just start upgrading a few songs at a time, checking that everything is working as it is supposed to, to make sure you are comfortable with the process.
