Q: Why isn't iCloud in the "Edit SMTP ServersList"?

Hi I have an iCloud mail account.

I also have other accounts.

Now and then, for no reason I can determine, iCloud stops using "iCloud" as the outgoing server and uses one of my other accounts instead.

Of course that doesn't work so I get an error upon attempting to send.

So I go into ACCOUNTS and try to reset it.  I can see" iCloud" in the pulldown of SMTP servers - BUT when I try to view the smtp details by selecting "EDIT SMTP SERVER LIST" the iCloud server is not there.  All my other SMTP servers are - just not iCloud.

However - on my other machine - it's there.

What's going on?

Thanks!

    Hello Joel,

Thank you for being part of the Apple Community!

If I understand correctly, you are unable to send any emails using your iCloud email due to an SMTP server error.  I know how important it is to have all your email accounts working correctly.

What I would suggest is that you go ahead and re-add the iCloud mail SMTP server.

How to add a SMTP server to Mac Mail:

    1. Open Mail and choose Mail > Preferences.
    2. Click the Accounts tab.
    3. Click on Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) Edit SMTP Server List, and choose Edit SMTP Server List from the drop down menu
    4. Click " + " at the bottom left of the Server Window.
    5. Click on the new server in the list and rename it something like "iCloud 2" under description
    6. Use the following:

      1. Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
      2.
      3. SSL Required: Yes
      4.
      5. Port: 587
      6.
      7. SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
      8.
      9. Username: Your full iCloud email address (for example, emilyparker@icloud.com, not emilyparker)
      10.
      11. Password: Your iCloud password

iCloud: Mail server settings for email clients

Once the new iCloud server is listed, go back and choose your iCloud mail account and set to use the new iCloud SMTP server.

    Cheers!

    Thanks alex_ox,

I did what you said. However - After creating the new smtp server and assigning it to the account, when I close the window, a dialogue pops up asking if I want to save the account changes and outgoing server as iCloud (not the newly created "iCloud2")...  I expected to have to "save" the account changes upon closing the window, but this was evidently not saving them as I set them.

I chose "Save" and then reopened the Account preferences and the iCloud2 smtp server no longer exists.  Only the original iCloud server which as I say becomes intermittently forgotten by the account for some reason.

So I cannot seem to create AND save a new smtp server.

    This is very strange.

    Hey Joel,

At this point, I would suggest removing the iCloud email account and then re-adding it.  Before doing this, I would suggest backing up the computer.  Nothing I am going to suggest should cause any data loss, but it is always a good idea to have a backup.  Your computer has software on it called Time Machine.  It is fantastic software for backing up your computer.

Information on how to use Time Machine is available here:

Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Once the system is backed up, follow these steps to remove the iCloud account:

    1. Click on Apple Logo in upper left corner.
    2. Click the System Preferences.
    3. Click on Internet Accounts
    4. Click on iCloud in the left column
    5. Click on " - " at the bottom of the left column.
    6. Save everything to the local computer if possible.

Once the account is removed, restart the computer.  Then, come back to the System Prefences and add the iCloud account back to the computer.

iCloud: Set up iCloud Mail on your devices

Hope you have a great day!
