Jul 3, 2016 5:57 PM in response to taintideby leroydouglas,You can only replace it with a new battery of same kind as you have. There may or may not be a benefit.

Jul 6, 2016 11:19 AM in response to taintideby OGELTHORPE,Battery run times are a function of the number and type of applications one is using. The run times that Apple advertises are based on ultra conservative conditions that result in the 9-10 hour run times. They are not representative of 'real world' usage and you should not expect to equal them unless the only thing may do is edit text.
Installing a new battery might increase the current run time but not to 9+hours, and as all batteries do, it will over the course of time decrease. 5 hours is not the best, but still is acceptable.

Jul 6, 2016 11:46 AM in response to taintideby leroydouglas,Your battery seems to be normal.
You can get more information with this third party CoconutBatteryapp. http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
It has an on-line web feature which lets you look at your battery with other users of the same exact MBP, for comparison .
From the dropdown Menu coconutBattery>CoconutBattery On-line

Apps can affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity - Apple Support
Additionally, ANY anti-virus software or so-called "cleaning/optimizing/tune-up" apps will reduce your runtime, as can some forms of adware. Google Chrome, along with its evil minion :helper' apps, is a known plague on battery runtime. There are a number of recent articles on the web about how Chrome affects runtime on Windows computers too, so it's not a Mac thing."

Jul 6, 2016 6:13 PM in response to leroydouglasby MustangGT_4.6,^^^^not true^^^^, Taintide you can replace it with an aftermarket one made for your MBP with a higher "mAh" rating. The higher the longer it will last per charge. I have the same MacBook and I have got over 9 hrs on a charge just surfing the web but you need to be specific and turn off anything you are not using. If you are just doing word processing work then turn off your bluetooth and WiFI service etc. You just need to pay attention but if you're leaving everything on 5hrs is acceptable and I believe that is the projected time factor for your MacBook. Do a eBay search and I believe I have seen a 7000 "mAh" battery for it if not more but the higher the "mAh" the higher the $$$$ you will pay.

Apple does not supply batteries for old machines Mid 2012 Mac Book Pro, your only option is after market.
The point being you have to stick to the same form factor. You are not going to install a higher mAh retina model battery in your non-retina MBP. So you are limited.
I can say—
It is easy enough to figure mAh with the formula: mAh = Wh × 1000 / V
for the link provided above to NewerTech NuPower Battery: 7,123 mAh = 78Wh x 1000 / 10.95V
MacSales is a trusted and respected vendor this I do know.

Jul 7, 2016 9:58 AM in response to leroydouglasby MustangGT_4.6,I do not know why people think the new 2012 model MacBooks are old, mine was built in May 2016 and Apple still supplies this battery, first of all you need to get your facts straight before posting "parroting" what you hear and not know. The 2012 model has all the new hardware other than the processor and the ram, it has usb3, 4.0 bluetooth, I'm not going to list everything, if you want to know look it up.
