Q: Using Canon PowerShot SD500 with Photo

Does anyone have an idea of how I can use my somewhat dated Canon PowerShot SD500 camera with El Capitan Photo? That camera is not on the list of compatibles, but I was not planning on buying a new camera right away. That camera is not on the list of compatible ones. Thank you.

You should be able to use the mini-USB to USB cable that came with the camera to connect it to your Mac. If Photos doesn't launch by itself, launch it manually, turn the Sidebar on in the View menu and select the camera in the sidebar. You should be presented with an Import screen. Click on Import All.

TH.pngAnother possible solution is to put the memory car in  the card slot in your iMac.  It should appear on your Desktop. Then you can manually drag the folder of photos to the Desktop and import form there into the library.  That's how I import from any of my cameras that use memory cards.  I feel it's safer as it assures the files are safely on your hard drive before importing into the library.

Are you shooting JPEG or RAW?  All cameras are supported for JPEG  --  for RAW each camera is different - is Canon PowerShot SD500 the exact model - there is RAW support for the Canon EOS 500D

The RAW format is not even on the list of the cameras supported by Adobe's Raw converter.  (https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html#Can on)

If you are shooting RAW; use Canon's software that came with your camera to develop the RAW files. JPEGs or TIFF will be no problem.

Yes, it is the exact model.

I cannot use the Photo so far but have Yosemite on a laptop and was able to download photos as usual on it. JPEGs are what I've always shot and downloaded until El Capitan. I will continue to try to make Photo work for me on El Capitan. Thanks for info.

I will download the Canon software. Thanks. Meanwhile, I was able to open all using my laptop which still has Yosemite.

You'll still be under the compatibility issue of the system your're using and the RAW format of the camera.  The card reader option will let you import but the RAW format may not be supported by the system you're running.  For jpegs this method will work for any camera and any version for iPhoto and system.

Yes, I used the cable as usual. It just didn't import. Instead it said I needed to download software not available in the U.S. As I mentioned to others, I was able to download as usual on a laptop that has Yosemite. Thanks so much.
