El Capitan Beachball, Etret

General beach balling but random other than within browsers. Firefox and Chrome constantly bad. Safari worse, other times they all work fine but the finder is goofy.

Etre is below:

Problem: Beachballing

Description:

every now and then (throughout everyday) I get a beachball, apps delay opening, all browsers are slow…then not, then horribly slow etc. I’ve disabled wireless thinking maybe there was something up with our provider but nope same thing. The Etre check shows “excellent” and it is not.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.

Please back up all data before proceeding.

Step 1

If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.

Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):

sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nosappnd,noschg,nosunlnk,nouappnd,nouchg {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-

You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.

Step 2 (optional)

Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.

Start up in Recovery mode. You may be prompted to select a language, then the OS X Utilities screen will appear.

If you use FileVault 2, select Disk Utility, then select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another drive icon. Select Unlock from the File menu and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.

Select

Utilities Terminal

from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:

resetp

Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:

resetpassword

Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.

Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.

Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.

Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.

Select

Restart

from the menu bar.

B

The symbol cache is very large. It stores data used in logs and crash reports, and it may have grown because it's corrupt. The cache is created automatically, and if deleted, it should be recreated when you restart the computer. Initially, at least, it will be a lot smaller.

I've seen one unverified report that a system became unbootable when the cache was deleted. That would have been due to a corrupt installation of OS X, but you should be prepared to reinstall if necessary. There is no reason to panic as long as you have good backups.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

/System/Library/Caches/com.apple.coresymbolicationd

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.apple.coresymbolicationd" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, select the line below and copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

/System/Library/Caches

In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

A folder named "Caches" should open. Inside it is a subfolder named "com.apple.coresymbolicationd". Move that subfolder to the Trash, restart, and empty.

C

One of your applications is serving a web page on a high-numbered port. The server process is using excessive resources and perhaps slowing down the system. To find out which application it is, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "httpd" in the search box. An entry with that name should appear in the process table. Double-click the entry to open the inspection window, then look for the name of the parent process at the top of the window.

D

You have an external drive (not connected when you ran the test) or perhaps a Time Machine network backup device that is responding slowly and may be malfunctioning. Whether that's related to the original question, I can't say.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.

The test works on OS X 10.8 ("Mountain Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.

Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The procedure is easy to do right, but it's also easy to do wrong, so I've made the instructions very detailed. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.

2. If you don't already have a current backup, please back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.

You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.

In this case, however, there are ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone who understands the code can verify what it does.

You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website many times over a period of years. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.

Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

☞ Copy the text of a particular web page (not this one) to the Clipboard.

☞ Paste into the window of another application.

☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.

5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is intermittently slow, run the test during a slowdown.

You may have started up in safe mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual before running it. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

6. If you have more than one user, and only one user is affected by the problem,, and the affected user is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.

7. Load this linked web page (on the website "GitHub") in Safari. Press the key combination command-A to select all the text, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing command-C.

8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name ("Terminal") into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.

9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.

If the test is taking much longer than usual to run because the computer is very slow, you might be prompted for your password a second time. The authorization that you grant by entering it expires automatically after five minutes.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:

Test started

Part 1 of 4 done at: … sec

Part 4 of 4 done at: … sec

The test results are on the Clipboard.

Please close this window.

The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress.

Wait for the final message "Please close this window" to appear—again, usually within a few minutes. If you don't see that message within about 30 minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it. Then go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.

In order to get results, the test must either be allowed to complete or else manually stopped as above. If you close the Terminal window while the test is still running, the partial results won't be saved.

11. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it manually, quit Terminal. The results will have been saved to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "close this window" message. Please wait for it and try again.

If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

12. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the software that runs this website. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

13. When you're done with the test, it's gone. There is nothing to uninstall or clean up.

14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

15. The linked UNIX shell script bears a notice of copyright. Readers of ASC may copy it for their own personal use. Neither the whole nor any part may be redistributed.

Ok, here are the results. Two notes... per the other response, "steamclean" is a gaming app my sons use and never caused problems before... this recent problem you are looking into existed before I reinstalled Steam.

Lastly, both QuarkXpress and Cinema4d (Maxon) shown here are demos. However, I thought I had removed all of the Quark files just a day and a half into the demo period which was last month (June) so interesting to see there is still trash from that one. Haven't had issues with Cinema before.

Hmmm... I don't see any obvious culprit in your EtreCheck report, and you have 18GB of RAM free at the time of the report, which is way more than enough. You say this mostly occurs in your browsers? If you don't mind sharing, can you provide some example websites that you usually have open?

But, even trying to empty the trash can start a beachball. Pasting this original text in for the initial question caused a beachball. Right now, I have a webinar playing and things are going ok. I've restarted, ran disk aid on everything I can and nothing had to be done. I have totally quit all Creative Cloud apps which I have suspected but with 24 gigs of ram installed and usually just Photoshop and maybe one other, there shouldn't be anything huge.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

Thanks Linc, for taking a look. Although this was specifically when I opened Chrome, the type of delay and time of delay is pretty much the same when I sometimes just try to empty the trash.. or force quit an app etc.

Ok.. After step 1, the problem didn't seem to arise... I tried an Adobe CC 2015 app, had to sign in and it took a little longer but as I was a guest and signing in, it wasn't a problem once started. Browsers seemed to all be fine. Playing around in the system seem to be normal, no beachballs or delays. Emptied trash w/o an issue.

After step 2, in safe mode, it too seemed to go well. I was able to connect to our wireless and use the browsers a little. All seemed fine.

Finally, after restarting as normal, it took literally 75 seconds before I could do anything besides move the cursor around. Beachballed when I opened Chrome to post this stuff here. I only have a mouse plugged in at the moment (left over from step 2 above) so my external drives seem not to be the issue.

HISTORY NOTE: I did a clean install of El Capitan about a month ago but I have used my Time Machine back-up to pull various apps (including /Library/AppSupport files) and such. All Adobe stuff was re-downloaded and anything I needed back from the App Store I just re-downloaded and installed.

Looks like something might be up w/my user account? If that is your next idea, the only thing I'm wondering about is... will (should I) re-download the Adobe cloud stuff (deleting the apps I have now to avoid having everything twice, for two users?) and anything about my Apple ID needing to change if I do need to create a new user? etc.

Thanks so much for your insight!

But, even trying to empty the trash can start a beachball.

This makes me suspect maybe your disk is failing. While this Mac is not too old, it can happen with rotating disk drives. You might consider making a Genius Bar appointment at a local Apple Store and having them run their more extensive diagnostics (even if you have to leave it over night). And as an owner of a 27" iMac I know they are not fun to lug to the Apple Store, but I've done it a few times since I got mine in 2009.

This is a just a guess.

I would suggest following through with Linc's diagnostic steps, as he can often times identify problems other miss.

Hello thumbslinger,

Why did you reinstall the system? And how did you reinstall? If you used anything other than a system restore during the install or Migration Assistant (the same thing as the installer, underneath), then all bets are off.

You can always try creating a new user. It sure wouldn't hurt and is a much better test than running in safe mode. But what you are describing sounds like networking problems and networking is defined at the system level, not the user level. I was just about to say that you don't have any 3rd party software that looks like it could be interfering, but then I noticed that "clean up" software. So ignore everything I just said. All bets are off.

I can tell you that EtreCheck really doesn't exercise networking at all. So if the problem you are having only involves the network, EtreCheck might very well report "excellent".

You should definitely remove any and all "clean up" apps right away. Then you could try a new user account. But given I don't know what original happened to your machine, how you restored it, or what the "clean up" software has done, the only advice I feel comfortable making at this point is to erase the hard drive and reinstall the OS. This time, use the installer or Migration Assistant to restore only user documents. Manually reinstall any 3rd party software. I suggest doing the install using a new "admin" user that you don't currently have. Then you will be able to check the machine and make sure everything is running the way it should. At that point you can run Migration Assistant to bring over your old account via "user documents only".

Hi-

I had done the upgrade to El Capitan from Mountain Lion and it was horrible. After two days of messing with it, I wiped the drive and did a clean install via Disk Utilities as the Apple suggestion.

"Clean-up"... if you're referring to the "Steam"...that is a gaming api.. problem existed before that install.

AppCleaner is the freebie I'm sure you're aware of that has been around awhile. I've never had an issue with that one. It's even seemingly performed better than other software I've paid for in the past!

Regardless, after the initial test Linc had me do, creating a new account seemed like the next step. Really intrigued as to what this latest diagnostic will reveal.

As my latest response to him mentioned, it did uncover some left-over trash from a demo I installed last month. And I know Quark is about as bad as Adobe as to constantly checking via the net so perhaps there is a networking issue relate to that?

Either way, thanks for that terrific piece of software EtreCheck... since using that, I have found small things on a couple of my machines that has helped me immensely!

Hello again thumbslinger,

When was this? Has El Capitan been behaving poorly since the clean install? Or did the behaviour change more recently? Was there any change to the system (and I mean any change) that corresponds to the poor behaviour you are describing?

And how did you restore after the reinstall? If you didn't manage that very carefully, you could have reinstalled some problems.

No. I am talking about AppCleaner. OS X has no built-in uninstallation facility like Windows. Any app that claims to provide that capability is wrong. Usually they are outright scams. At best, this app is just deleting random files, which can't be good. Did you manually run the app before running EtreCheck? If not, then that is a hidden login item. The app could be trying to do something clever at runtime and that could be causing the problem you describe.

Your problem doesn't seem to have an obvious cause. If you start out by deciding that certain apps can't possibly cause the problem, then you will probably never get it resolved. If there isn't an obvious cause, the usual procedure is to start uninstalling any 3rd party software that is likely to interfere. Keep going until you run out of 3rd party software, whether or not it is likely to interfere. If there is no improvement, then erase the disk and reinstall the OS. At that point the problem should be gone. If not, the machine needs to be repaired by Apple. Once you are sure that it isn't a hardware problem, only then you can start to recover by restoring only user documents via Migration Assistant (and only via Migration Assistant).

Regardless, after the initial test Linc had me do, creating a new account seemed like the next step. Really intrigued as to what this latest diagnostic will reveal.

Adding a new user account is always a good test. It doesn't hurt anything and will clearly show if the problem lies at the system level or at the user account level. Unfortunately, problems at the system level are often easier to fix.

As my latest response to him mentioned, it did uncover some left-over trash from a demo I installed last month. And I know Quark is about as bad as Adobe as to constantly checking via the net so perhaps there is a networking issue relate to that?

Thanks! I wouldn't worry too much about left over trash. Worries like that are what often lead people down the path to "clean up" software. As I mentioned before, there is no uninstallation architecture on OS X. It is perfectly normal, and really unavoidable, to have your hard drive full of old junk. EtreCheck only looks for items that are actually loaded into the OS and ignores everything else. People often think that the number of files on disk can be detrimental to performance, but this is not true. Trying to manually go into hidden directories and deleting files that may or may not be used is much more detrimental.
