Q: MacBook Pro 15" mouse/cursor freeze on start up

I have a mid 2015 Macbook Pro 15" Retina with OSX El Capitan 10.11.5. the last few days the cursor has been slow to come back to life after coming out of sleep mode. Now it has started freezing up. The keyboard still works and if a file is highlighted the trackpad accepts a click but the cursor stays frozen. After a hard start the cursor works for about 30 seconds but then freezes again. I don't have Fusion or any other AV software.

Is there a fix for it? I am a basic user and dont know my way much around the error finding methods. Looking forward to some help...Thank you.

Thanks Kaz. Your tips are more for Maverick. Plus I couldn't see any fixes for cursor freeze with El Capitan unless I have missed something.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Thanks Linc. I tried Safe Mode but this time the cursor refused to move even for the 30 seconds that it used to. So I went back to normal mode to compare but it was the same, no movement. However there was something else that I tried, I hooked up an external wireless mouse via a USB dongle. That worked in both safe and normal modes. There may be something wrong with the Trackpad as it is not responding to gestures anymore but it does respond to clicks/double clicks in both safe & normal modes. Is there anything I can do to check if this is a software or hardware issue?

Please start up in Recovery mode. If the trackpad still doesn't work, you're dealing with a hardware fault.

Did start up in Recovery mode twice. Trackpad didn't work but the clicks still worked so there must be something wrong with the touch sensor. I have been given time by the technician for early next week. Will post the results when I get my notebook back.

    Thanks for your help Linc
