What do you mean by lost? The iDVD application is no longer on your hard drive in the Applications folder or what?
get message loading themes then stops
That implies you do have the iDVD application. What version is it and do you get any messages when it stops loading themes. Look in the Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iDVD folder to see if the themes are located in the folder. If they are not there look in the Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/iDVD folder to see if they are there.
Download and apply the iDVD 7.1.2 updater and then try launching iDVD again.
won't read dvds
iDVD never could read DVD disks, only create them. We use DVD Player to read and play DVD disks or the Finder to read what's on a DVD disk. So what is your issue?
