Q: Ipod classic 5th generation has no audio from earphones.

Ipod classic 5th generation has no audio from earphones, but can play songs through computer, when plugged into computer. Ipod recognises when headphones are plugged in and when hold switch deployed. Is the likely problem the earphone jack or a hardware issue on mainboard. I could attempt a fix of the earphone jack, but a mainboard issue is a totally different animal. Would appreciate advice from someone who had had the same problem and fixed the issue.

I take it you've proved the headphones with another device. Is there any hint of audio if you push the jack one way or another? That might confirm that it is just the socket that is damaged rather than anything else. The headphone jack hold switch assembly is relatively cheap. I've done several swap outs of both these and batteries on 5th and 6th gen. classics. The hard part is getting the case open but there are online guides that explain the steps.

Thanks tt2. I have done all that you suggested. Swapped earphones, cleaned earphone socket, wiggled earphone jack, used contact cleaner on socket; still no audio out from headphone jack. What I wanted to know is if the audio going to 30 pin socket at base of ipod and audio going to earphone socket are from different paths on the circuit board. I am trying to eliminate anything on the circuit board being faulty. Is there any point on the circuit board that I can check to see if audio is actually going to the earphone socket. Not having a circuit of the audio path on the board makes it a bit difficult to carry out fault analysis.

If the audio socket assembly is faulty can you recommend suitable vendor for quality parts, as there are so many to choose from, but the quality of the parts is questionable.

    Appreciate your assistance.

I bought from the first reasonably cheap seller on ebay that had a large number of transactions and positive feedback. It was some time ago, and I'm in the UK, so it probably wouldn't help even if I could recall the seller.

The audio output from the 30-pin socket isn't affected by the volume control so there is definitely a split in the audio path before the headphone jack. You could probably pick up the signal from the connector that goes to the headphone jack, but If you're going to go to the trouble of opening it up it might be easier to get the replacement part and fit it rather than trying to probe the tiny connector.

Hi tt2. Thanks for the prompt reply. I will go ahead and order a headphone socket assembly from ebay and will update you in due course as to the result.
