What languarge is your keypboard set for? The typing of special characters may defer from languae to language.
On my US English keyboard, shift 6 produces a free-standing caret : ^
To put a caret as an accent mark over a letter I type option i immediately followed by the letter: ê
If you keybaord is not set to US English then it may be completely different.
