Your description leads me to believe that the "US Holidays" calendar is a subscribed calendar. What info is listed for that calendar when you click on it and use the keyboard combo of (⌘+I), and select "Calendar Info...?"
The second set of Holidays is probably being generated because Calendar>Preferences...>General>"Show Holidays calendar" is selected.

When I get the info, it shows a subscription address that I can only see part of -- starts with https://p24-calenars.icloud.com/holiday/US_ -- from which I see that it IS an Apple calendar and on the iCloud. Yes, "Show holidays calendar" is selected, but when I unselect it, the US Holidays calendar I mentioned goes away. Interestingly, having done that and rechecked it, I now have just one occurrence of the holidays, so maybe something did go wrong on iCloud. Anyway, looks good now. Thanks!
(Incidentally, I didn't have two copies of the entries. There were at least 6.)
