Q: cannot use both: iMusic and previous music library

Hi,

in order to use iMusic on my iphone and ipad, I need to activate the iCloud Music Library; but when I do this, all my old files, in this case various language courses, disappear or cannot be played anymore.

I chose 'merge' btw.

Does anybody know how I can use both? And also, why the **** does Apple do this?

iPad Pro, iOS 9.3.2, iphone 4s too

    Hello builtthispool,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities with your question about Music and language courses.  I use Apple Music and I also have a lot of audio files that are not typically found in the iTunes store.  I'm happy to answer your questions.

First of all I wanted to provide you with this link that will explain a little about the differences between Apple Music and iTunes Match:

iCloud Music Library: Understanding differences between Apple Music and iTunes Match

Especially take note of this section:

Apple Music and iTunes Match are not backup services for your original music library. Be sure to back up your music library so that you have a copy of your music and other information if your Mac or PC is ever replaced, lost, or damaged.

Before you begin to work with using either Apple Music or iTunes Match, whichever you choose, you'll want to back up your language courses.  Here's a link to explain how to back up your iTunes library:

Manage and back up your iTunes media library

Once you've backed up your iTunes library you can decide which service you want to use.  While both services will upload songs that aren't found in the  iTunes Store, it's possible that they cannot upload or match language courses due to the file type.  What you can do instead is sync those files physically by connecting your iPhone and iPad to your computer.

Sync media between your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and iTunes on your Mac or PC

    Have a great day!

    Thanks for your answer Tim.

Unfortunately, now that iMusic is activated on my ipad, itunes does not allow me to transfer anything from my computer to my ipad. When I click on my ipad and then on the 'Music' tab, where I used to be able to sync my itunes library with my devices, it now just says 'iCloud music library is on'. All I can still sync are my voice memos.

The file type shouldn't be the issue here - these are all mp3 files.

So first my music was deleted or made unplayable on my devices, and now I am not allowed to transfer anything to them.

Is there another way of solving this?

I have a couple more articles that explain the order these steps must be taken in, in order for your non-Apple Music files to upload to the cloud.

Sync Apple Music across your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and computer

Add music from your own collection to your Apple Music library

In order for your personal music and language files to join the Apple Music library, you must upload them from a Mac or PC running iTunes.

“*When you choose Merge, songs on your device that are in the Apple Music catalog become instantly available to access on your other devices. On iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, songs that we can’t match are shown on your other devices. But you won’t be able to play them on your other devices until you upload them from your Mac or PC  with iTunes.”

This is the section in the second article that you'll want to start from:

Upload songs with iTunes from your Mac or PC

To add tracks from your Mac or PC to your Apple Music library:

    1. Sign in to iTunes on your Mac or PC with the Apple ID and password that you use for your Apple Music membership.
    2. Make sure iCloud Music Library is on

You'll note below how Apple Music handles the different files and what the constraints are:

    • You can have up to 100,000 songs in your music library. Songs you purchased from the iTunes Store don't count against this limit.
    • Only songs under 200 MB or less than 2 hours are uploaded.
    • Songs that are encoded in ALAC, WAV, or AIFF formats will be transcoded to a separate temporary AAC 256 Kbps file locally, before they're uploaded. The original files aren't changed.
    • Songs that are encoded in AAC or MP3 formats must meet certain quality criteria to be matched or uploaded.
    • Songs that contain DRM (Digital Rights Management) must be authorized for playback on your Mac or PC to be matched or uploaded.
    • Songs that you upload with iTunes won’t take up space on your devices, unless you save them to listen offline.

If your language files do not update, be sure to check if they are the right format, and are not DRM or if they are have been authorized to be matched or uploaded.

    Best wishes!
