Q: Can't find Macintosh HD drive after failed software installation

HELP!!!! How do I know if my hard drive is dead & beyond DIY repair?

I reset my iMac and then tried installing the software but the power went out and so the installation failed. I went back on to try and install the software but I couldn't find the Macintosh HD in Disk Utility. It takes really long to load the Installation disk but once it does it cannot install because I can't find the HD.

I'm using a wireless mouse and a windows corded keyboard.

So far I've tried

- The option key restart: it boots to the menu but only shows the Installation disk and nothing else

- Turning it off, removing all the cables and holding the power button: No changes

- Restarting it with the installation disk

I'm pretty sure I've damaged the HD but I just want confirmation before I take it into Apple. Btw does anyone know how much it would cost? I know you can't know for sure without taking it in to Apple but an estimate would be greatly appreciated.

iMac11,2

Operating system - iOS 10.6

Processor speed - 3.06GHz

Memory - 4GB

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6)
