Q: Finder is slow or not responding

I've got a huge problem with Finder on my iMac (late 2012). Finder is often not responding, of responding really slowly. Looks like it started weeks ago, maybe after the latest upgrade of El Capitan.

I use Finder in combination with iCloud (Drive), maybe that causes the problem, or TimeMachine has something to do with it.

Anyone has the same problem and/or a solution? I downloaded the latest upgrade of ElCapitan (update combo 10.11.5) but the problem is still there.

My iMac was repaired weeks before the problem started, some extra memory was added (16GB). It's 21,5 inch, has 2,7 GHz Intel Core i5. OSX 10.11.5

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), Memory added: 16GB instead of 8GB

Run this test and post its results here.

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Try opening the Go menu with the Option (Alt) key pressed - Library - Preferences and locate the file called ‘com.apple.finder.plist’. Move it to the trash and restart your computer.

I have located the com.apple.finder.plist, deleted it, restarted and the problem is still there. Looks like the connection between iCloud and Finder is corrupted.

    That's just a guess.

When the Finder becomes unresponsive, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

I am not the OP, but I am having a similar issue in El Capitan and see some telling messages in the log Linc mentioned. Starting today, I frequently get no response when clicking on a Finder item, and it does not become selected. Also, portions of the windows like the left sidebar items are sometimes missing. I can move and switch windows, but I am unable to select any files until I relaunch Finder. It then inevitably happens again shortly after. Here are the messages from the log corresponding to when I click:

    Hi Gogme Web,

I had the same problem on 5 recent Macbook PRO. I solved the problem deactivating Google Drive syncronization and removing Google Drive App from the system.

Do you use Google Drive on your iMac?

    Let me know.

Matt, that worked for me so far. I disabled google drive sync, relaunched Finder, and haven't seen any hangs since I did that today.

    Thank you

    You're welcome CL-PSL,

So, after 24h and 6 problems solved, we can say that the definitive procedure is to de-activate Google Drive Sync and to re-start Finder process.

    In specific:

1- Disable Google Drive sync and close Google drive application: https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2375081

    2- Restart your Mac.

Still no issues for me after disabling it.

Also, here are the English instructions to disable the synchronization. Matt's came through in Italian for me.

Something to note for the English version, Google says, "On a Mac, the icon is in the menu bar at the top right of your desktop screen." This is not necessarily true depending on how many extra menu items you have installed. It can be found somewhere among your Finder menu item icons (where you have your clock, name, etc.) Since Google explicitly said "at the top right", it took me a minute to find it. The Italian version explains it better.
