Q: how to create the axis starting with 1

Hello!

I'd like to create a diagram. The y-axis shall start with 1 instead of 0, but keeping values <1 in the diagram. My values <1 are shown upwards, but I want them to look as if they were negative. When I set the minimal value =1, values <1 disappear. Has anyone a solution to this problem?mI hope this is understandable and someone has an answer for me.

Thanks a lot in advance!

    Hi StrawBerryLetter,

Please post a screen shot of a small part of your table (or a made-up table) so that we can understand your aim.

See this User Tip by Wayne on how to post a screen shot.

More information will lead to a solution .

    Ian.

    Hello Ian!

What I now have is in the first picture. But I want the y-axis to start with 1, this is simple by changing the minimal value. But all values <1 will disappear. What I want is the bars to go negative if the values are <1 (second picture with red arrow). I hope it is now a little bit more clear. Thanks a lot! Bildschirmfoto 2016-07-06 um 12.18.12.png

Thanks for the screen shots of diagrams (graphs, charts). We need to see your data table to understand your aim.

    Regards,

    Ian.

These three columns are the values for y. The x has no value, but names (previous pictures)

    Hi StrawBerryLetter,

Thanks for the screen shot of your data table.

Here is my take on what you want to do.

The data table (Table 1) has a Header Row and a Header Column (as required for a Category Graph)

    Screen Shot 2016-07-06 at 10.32.43 PM.png

Copy Table 1 then Paste (Table 1-1).

Formula in Table 1-1 Cell C2

    =IF(Table 1::C2<1,0−Table 1::C2,Table 1::C2)

Fill Down and Fill Right to the last cell (E5 in this example).

If any Y value is less than 1 (<1) subtract it from 0 (zero) to make it negative.

I am uncertain why Column B is blank, so I deleted it.

Is that what you are trying to do?

It is basically it. Firstly, I really appreciate your helpfulness, you're really trying to solve this, thanks for that. But the diagram needs to start with 1 at the y-axis, so do I have to subtract the values from 1 to get them into negative?

Can't believe there isn't an easier solution for this :-( In excel, there is just one button.

    Hi SL,

Numbers makes no provision for setting an axis at a value other than zero, and will graph only the values supplied. You can supply offset values to the chart, and replace the Y-axis value labels with labels in a text box or single column column table with borders removed from the cells.

Here's an example, using the same 'data' as in Ian's example above.
