Q: iPhone keeps sending old email

I've had this problem for a long time. My phone will randomly emit an email send sound. I'll check my sent boxes and outboxes and there is no sign of an email being sent at that time.

The Apple Mail app is sending my wife copies of an email message that I originally sent 9 months ago. This is totally random - every one in a while, and sometimes several times a day - my phone keeps sending the same email. So far this email has been sent around 80 times.

This email is being send by my ATT / Yahoo email account. I tried wiping my phone and restoring from a backup but this doesn't fix it. I accessed the email server and I didn't find anything there, either.

We're going nuts over this. To make things worse, the email was a reminder that my wife had created an overdraft - a sore subject - and she's continually being hit with this. (I can imagine the article on CNET: "Divorce blamed on iPhone")

Any suggestions? (Having my wife create a spam rule is only a band-aid)

    Hello T-Y,

Thank you for being part of the Apple Community!

If I understand correctly, your iPhone is randomly sending an old email to your wife.  I can certainly understand not wanting random emails sent.

The first thing we want to do is to make sure you have a current backup of everything on your iPhone. Nothing I am going to suggest should cause any data loss, but it is always a good idea to have a backup.  If you follow this link, you will find instructions on how to do a backup:
How to backup your devices using iCloud or iTunes

While wiping the phone was a good step, it is possible that whatever is causing this to happen is also in the backup that was restored.  Once you have a current backup, I would suggest that you remove the email account and then re-add it.

Remove your email account and set it up again

If you still have issues with sending and receiving email, try removing your email account from your device and then add it back again:*

    1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website to verify that all of your email is there or check if your email is saved somewhere other than your iOS device.
    2. On your iOS device, tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    3. Tap the email account you want to remove.
    4. Tap Delete Account.
    5. Add your account again.

*iOS backups made in iCloud and iTunes include a backup of your mail settings, but not your emails. Emails deleted from your iOS device aren’t recoverable from an iCloud or iTunes backup. Learn more about backups in iCloud and iTunes.

Additional information can be found here:

Get help with Mail on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Hopefully, this will remove whatever is causing that email to be randomly sent.

    Cheers!

As I said in my email "I tried wiping my phone and restoring from a backup but this doesn't fix it."
