Q: Iphone Update

I'm using an iPhone SE with the latest iOS and updates.  I'm curious about the update process and storage.  Does the updates you do for your apps and iOS completely remove the older versions or is there garbage left behind?  Would a paid for iPhone cleaner come in handy?

Thanks,

iPhone SE, iOS 9.3.2

To your first question, it depends. If you update iOS over the air then yes, old stuff is left behind. OTA iOS updates are delta updates, i.e., they update the files that change only. iOS updates through iTunes install a complete fresh version of iOS so nothing old is left. App updates are app specific, cannot give you a yes or no answer.

As to your second question, I would not use any form of iPhone cleaner.

Absolutely, not under any circumstances, get any "cleaner" software. Not for iOS, nor Mac. They just cause serious problems.

A "point" iOS update will only replace system software. If it's a major update, or a Restore is required, your data and recent photos will then be copied back onto the iPhone from the backup, made just before.

Backups for not include apps, music, or older photos. You need to regularly import from and sync your iPhone with your computer.

iTunes backups should be encrypted in order to include your sensitive data.
