Q: Seagate External HDD won't show up.

Hi.

I have a 1TB Seagate Back up Plus external harddrive, and it wont show up in my Mac Pro.

The Mac Pro is the 2006 Intel Xeon model running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. The System requirements for the external HDD are snow leopard or higher, so I don't know why it isn't working.

P.S. When I plug in the USB cable into the computer, the HDD starts to spin, but it never shows up in the finder or on the desktop. Also, this HDD works in my MacBook Pro, but not the Mac Pro.

If anyone has any useful information, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hey You're instructions totally worked.  It's all in how you "partition" your external hard drive.  Thanks!!

My drive was working fine and then all of a sudden stopped.

I can get it to show up in disk utility but the information about the drive is wrong (it says 2.2TB uninitialized, when it is actually 1TB initialized) This was my main Time Machine drive.

I am running a MBP 15" mid-2012 no retina display with 10.11.5. The drive does not show up in the finder, but in Disk Utility it has three options not grayed out. First Aid, Erase, and Info are options. First Aid and Erase both fail when you try to run them. Info brings up mostly correct info except the capacity and used space.

Here is a pic showing the finder, disk utility and the info window. I also tried tilting it on its side and standing it vertical with no luck.

2.2TB is an endpoint of a particular size and class of drives and controllers.

It is likely that the interface card in the external enclosure has died.

If you can extract the drive and move it to a different enclosure, you may find the data are mostly fine.

I had the same problem! The solution is :

Open up Disk Utility--> Select your harddrive--> Verify Disk--> Repair Disk

This is what fixed my issue.

Basically, My external hard drive was not appearing on Finder. It was not new. And the drive connected perfectly, the light showed up and you were able to feel the vibrations of the disk running. And doing this above trick worked perfectly. (:

    - Have you rebooted the computer?

    - Is the drive self-powered, that only powered by the USB bus? If so it could be that the USB port does not provided enough power. You can try a powered USB hub. You can also get a USB pigtail that takes power from to USB ports to the single USB port on the drive like this one.

    - Does it show in Disk Utility?
    - Does it show in System Profiler under USB? You should see the chipset in the enclosure as well as the HD itself

    - Does it work/be seen when connected to another computer?

It could be the electronics in the enclosure or the disk inside died

That info would indicate either of:

    - The disk inside failed or there is a connection problem between the disk and enclosure

    - The USB port is now not providing enough power.

I have a seagate external hard drive that was working.  Then it started to say disk not ejected properly.  I had this happen on my other macbook pro about a year ago.  Now its doing it on my new one.  I tried it on my iMac and it works fine.  Its just not recognizing it on my macbook.  It doesn't show under disk utility either.  The light is on on the HDD but you can't see it on the computer.

Please help! Im losing my mind over here.
