Q: I lost the drafts of my mail

Hello all,

Sometime this site is really difficult to handle.

It is not really common sense.

As I'm typing an answer, it might happen than i switch from the present page to a previous one due to a skip of my fingers on the mouse.

Then i try to recover my mail .... gone.

I jump onto my profile and search trough the different tabs ... lost.

This happened many times.

In a general way this site is absolutely not handy. It requires thought to find your way to what you're looking for.

Quite far from Apple concept in fact: you really need the Book to understand how this thing works.

If someoe knows where my answers under progress have gone ... I would be grateful.

Lionnel.

    I'm not entirely sure I've understood correctly, but if the issues are with this site see these four links to your own content. Until recently the first three would highlight threads with new activity since your last visit and although the highlighting no longer works (without help) most recently updated content is still shown first:

    Authored Discussions

    Participated Discussions

    Following Discussions

    Recently Viewed Discussions

    See also Site map of Communities and Categories for access to similar views of community forums, and Minimal CSS tweaks for ASC for a way to bring back the highlighting.

    I understand what you're saying: it's very easy to accidentally close the editor window while typing a post. Now, the script does save the content periodically. If you go right back, it may offer to restore saved content, and if you're lucky, it'll be part of what you lost. I'm very careful to use other tabs if I need to browse something while posting, so I almost never lose a post.

    Hi Lionnel,

    I compose a reply in Pages (or Word or TextEdit) while I browse Tabs for information in Apple Support Communities and elsewhere.

    When I am satisfied with my reply:

    • Select All and Copy;
    • Return to the thread in ASC;
    • Command r to reload (in Safari);
      • That tells me if I need to log in again, and it tells me if someone else has already replied.
    • Reconsider my reply;
    • Log in if needed;
    • Click on Reply;
    • Paste;
    • Post my reply.

    Regards,

    Ian.

    That is the problem here: this site doesn't work like an email or mails - it is an online forum on somebody else's website (in this case Apple's) and unless you hit a button to either post, cancel, or edit (or any other available button), whatever you've done is gone if you close that window. That is how it works with most online forums. This site does periodically save the content - but more than likely it has not.

    So, never close that window if you are in the middle of a post. Leave that open and simply switch to another tab; when finished there, you can go back to your original one. And, don't forget that this site logs you out after about 30 minutes of inactivity, so make sure you copy/save whatever you have in case that happens.

    A situation as you describe is supposed to be auto-saved every few seconds (a minute?) so that if it happens your work can be recovered... let's see if I can demonstrate

    I took a screenshot... now I'll take another {click/tap to enlarge}

    screenshot-discussions apple com 2016-07-08 14-18-52.png:: screenshot-discussions apple com 2016-07-08 14-19-53.png

    Now I'll close this TAB and then come back in a minute or so

    Voila!

    1. Choose [Reply] upon return
    2. Choose [Recover] from the alert concerning auto-saved version

    I should add that if you don't see the recover button when you expect to do so it can sometimes help to cancel, refresh the page and then hit reply again.

    Too true. as with everything else around this joint, "expect the unexpected" = like this (it 'recovered' my complete message to the OP)

    screenshot-discussions apple com 2016-07-08 14-42-31.png

    Furthermore, it is not completely reliable - as I have expected a Recover and not gotten one on several occasions

    Hello Turing,

    Thanks for your advice.

    I was afraid i missed something in the way to manage my posts, but obviously everybody has some difficulties.

    And now I have your explanations.

    That's perfect to me.

    Have a nice day.
