Jun 23, 2015 3:20 PM in response to Kappyby oregonjoe,Apple's support page gives no warning about never putting your macbook to sleep when disconnecting a display. In fact it says the opposite, to put your computer to sleep just to be safe. From the Apple support page:
For best results, put your computer to sleep before disconnecting your display.
That said, I believe they are wrong, or there is a bug, because I too have problems with my macbook not waking up when I put it to sleep before unplugging my monitor.

Jul 8, 2016 1:02 AM in response to joeln123by malcolmhall,I still have this years-old problem on OS X 10.11.5 with a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with Intel Iris Pro. The monitor is a Samsung U24E850R connected via display port.
The MacBook Pro with lid shut is connected to the monitor and on charge, however the setting to "prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off" is not checked so I can assume it was asleep as it has been left all night. In morning it is disconnected from the display, and then when opening lid to use it the screen stays black, force touch pad does not vibrate, networking is disabled cannot remote log in, the only sign of life is the backlight on keyboard comes on. The Macbook Pro needs hard reboot. After the reboot I take a sysdiagnose and have been attaching them to this bug report: 26419697
