Q: Back Up

I have a question about "backing up" my iPhone. Basically, I have no idea what the means or why I should do it. I recently got a message saying my ICloud was nearly full and it looks like the majority of the info there is labeled Back Up. What should I be doing? Should I be deleting Back Up files? What the heck are they? Can I pick and choose what I delete or is it just a bulk delete of everything?

They are backups of your IOS devices, you can delete them if you wish, but then you will have no backup

Backup is a copy of your data and settings, so you can restore it in case something happens to your device, you loose it, or want to transfer it to another device. You should always have backups of your iDevice and computer files.

Backups do not contain everything that's on your device. Your photos, for example, need to be imported to your computer photo app and then backed up from there.
