    Hi Rugman304,

Thanks for asking your question in the Apple Support Communities. I use my iPhone all the time and depend on being able to send out iMessages. I will be happy to provide some information for you on this issue.

The first thing that I would recommend is restarting your iPhone. A simple restart is very beneficial to the performance of the iPhone. Then you would want to follow the steps in this article:

If you can‘t send or receive messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    Have a great weekend!

    There are many possible reasons.

    • The other person may not have Apple gear.
    • The other person may not be in a Wi-Fi area, or in a cellular area that supports iMessage.
    • You may not be in a Wi-Fi area, or in a cellular area that supports iMessage.
    • The other person may have an Apple iOS device but turned iMessage "off".

There are other reasons.  These are a few.

So I have the same question....my iMessages were working up until about an hour and a half ago when it suddenly quit working. I thought it was because the person I was messaging with was on the phone but it still hasn't fixed itself even though we are getting each other's messages as texts. I have tried turning my iPhone off and back on. Turning iMessage off and back on, and nothing is working. It doesn't matter what iPhone user I try to message it sends as a regular text instead of iMessage. Is it an Apple problem today?

In order for an message to be sent as an iMessage instead of a regular SMS, both parties must be logged into iMessage and both parties must have an active data connection (either WiFi or cellular). Have you verified both of those conditions for both parties?

SMS messages do not require any data connection.

Yes sure have. I can't even get it to send/receive from an iPhone sitting next to me when both phones are on WIFI and don't have any issues with internet or apps requiring data connection.

So, why did you mark the thread as solved?

Sign out of iMessage on both devices and sign back in. Reset your network settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings. Try turning off WiFi and seeing if it works over cellular.
