hi,

my keyboard sometimes stops responding, despite the troubleshooting checkist.

then it works again only after i shut down and reboot my mac!

is this normal? if not, could it be due to some application? eg, i have photoshop installed and use it all the time... also openoffice document prog...

what else could it be?

i just replaced the keyboard with a new one but problem persists.

also had my mac in the mac repair and they found nothing wrong.

thanks!

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Please download and run EtreCheck, created by one of own helpers here in ASC. It is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information.

I agree with Mike Sombrio and macjack. Etrecheck will give diagnostic information about your machine and will not reveal any personal information. There are many, many users here who can interpret the output. Etrecheck is tried and tested.

    Hi Linc (and everyone!),

    thanks so much!!

sorry for the late replies-- my internet was having troubles...

BTW, i want to click the "helpful" button for each one of your great replies, but it is grayed out and won't work--any idea why? Only the 'reply' button works-the 'solved' button is grayed out too.

Linc, i tried all your instructions, yet i was unable to determine whether the problem still existed, as it is a very cagey one that only appears in random moments. Since i replaced my keyboard, it does seem to be much better, and has only had the problem once so far--again, when i had let my MAC sleep overnight.

I called applecare, and the rep told me i had to update from yosemite to el capitan in order to fix it.

she seemed to believe that the problem lay inherent in yosemite...
