Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities! It sounds like you aren't receiving push notifications or banners for the Messages app on your iPhone 6. It is definitely nice to know when incoming messages arrive. I'll be glad to provide you with some troubleshooting steps to resolve this.
To begin, let's take a look at this article:
Use Notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
This section specifically provides some relevant troubleshooting steps:
If you don't see notifications for a specific app
To get notifications, you need to be connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network. If you’re not getting notifications for a specific app, try these steps:
- Make sure that the app supports notifications. Go to Settings > Notifications, select the app, and make sure that Notifications are turned on.
- Make sure that you’re signed in to your Apple ID on your iOS device. Go to Settings > iTunes & App Stores and enter your Apple ID and password.
- Make sure that Do Not Disturb is turned off. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and tap Manual if it's turned on.
- If you’ve recently installed an app or restored from a backup, open the app to start getting notifications.

Notifications use Wi-Fi only when a cellular connection is unavailable. Firewalls and proxy servers might affect your ability to receive notifications. Get help using Apple Push Notification service (APNs).
Since there could be an issue specific to the Wi-Fi network you are using while trying to receive notifications, it would be beneficial to test in another location to see if the issue persists. If it is isolated to one network, you can take a look at the article related to Apple Push Notifications above.
In the event that you're still running into issues, we'd next want to have you force quit the Messages app and then restart your phone. The following articles have information on these steps:
Force an app to close on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Next up, we'd want to create a recent backup of your iPhone. Here's a support article that shows you what options you have:
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Once the backup has been created, we'd want to try to reset the settings on your device. This will not impact any of your personal data (e.g. pictures or apps), but you will need to adjust user-specific settings like wallpaper and ringtones. Also, be sure you have your preferred Wi-Fi network names and passwords available, as this step removes those from your device. After your phone is back up and running, test out notifications to see if the issue has been resolved. To perform this step, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
Finally, we will have you restore your iPhone 6 to factory settings temporarily. This helps us isolate if there is a software issue by installing a fresh copy of iOS. Once you confirm that notifications are working properly, you can restore your backup. Here are the relevant support articles to help:
Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings
Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup
Have a wonderful rest of your day!
