Q: Facetime grabs CPU & battery

Hi,

My Facetime recently develops a problem. It grabs almost CPU performance when using video call, like in the photo, and result in noisy from vent fan.

My Mb is Air mid 2013 version with an updated El Capital few months ago but the matter just happen recent 3, 4 weeks.

Have you experienced this problem and how to resolve it ?

Thanks

Tan

    Hi NgocTan!

I can definitely see where the fan running high would cause an issue with a FaceTime call since it would make it hard for both parties to hear.  Normally FaceTime won't use so many resources when running so we can figure out what's going on with it together by doing the following troubleshooting steps and testing after each one.

The first thing that we need to do is reset the System Management Controller (SMC).  By doing the SMC reset, as long as the MacBook Pro is well ventilated (like on a desk or solid surface as opposed to on your lap or pillow), then this should take care of it.  Take a look at this article to see how to do the SMC reset: Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

If they're still running high after doing that reset, we'd want to test it out in Safe Mode.  When starting the MacBook Pro in Safe Mode, it'll only load certain things that are needed to run it and will also do like a 'repair' on the system.  To get into Safe Mode to test it out, follow these steps here: OS X El Capitan: Start up in safe mode

Once those have been completed, if the fans are still running high and FaceTime is showing a high usage, then we'd need to isolate where the issue is exactly.  The first thing to do would be to test it out in a new user to see if it happens there too.  This would tell us the path that we'd need to take next.  This shows how to create a new user on your computer: OS X El Capitan: Set up users on your Mac

    Make it an awesome day!

    Thanks Steve for your advises.

I already reset SMC and will see how it's gonna be for a few days.

    Hi Alex,

My problem come back today when i used Facetime video mode. I used facetime for about 15-20mins then the vent fan rocketed maybe at max speed.

I posted the captured images of CPU/Mem/Energy when using Facetime video and not.

    Cheers,

    Ngoc Tan

Thank you for reaching back out to the Apple Support Communities.  Since it seems that the issue was taken care of for a little bit of time and is now back, the next step that we'd need to do is contact Apple Support to take a further look into this issue.  The contact information is listed here:
