Q: Steps and distance duplicating from iphone and apple watch

Hi, I would like to know how disabling fitness and motion for the health app on my iphone affects the Apple Watch distance and step calculations. Im disabling this option because I found its duplicating my distance and steps. Will my Apple Watch stop using gps location from my iPhone?

i know health app should analyze the data a prioritize my apple watch. Instead, its duplicating the info on my iphone and apple watch. Im not using third party apps. I dont mind disabling the fitness and tracking from my iphone only if my apple watch will be recieving gps information from my iphone when i workout.

    Hi

    Health and fitness data from Apple Watch, iPhone and any other sources is aggregated within the Health app on iPhone, which adjusts results to avoid any double counting of data from different sources.

    When multiple sources are available, the Health app uses a single data source to update your consolidated data. That source is selected based on the priority order that you have set (or that has been created automatically - eg by default, Apple devices rank above third party sources).

    What leads you to believe that data is being double counted?

    Today I run approximately 4K, but my apple watch is showing me 8K as total distance for today.

    I know that Health app should select between my devices and prioritize my order, I just don't know why this is not happening.

    I don't mind not tracking distance and steps information from my iPhone as long as my GPS information is being tracked when on an outdoor running with my Apple Watch (iPhone in my pocket). If I disable the tracking option from my iPhone, will my Apple Watch still be able use GPS information from my run?

    It should not be necessary to turn off any settings on your iPhone.

    If you are referring to the total distance reported by the Activity app on your watch, keep in mind that - along with any distances recorded by the watch during workouts - this total also includes distance travelled during the rest of the day (such as all of the steps that you have taken when walking around).

    Thanks. That run was the first thing I did in the morning and now its noon, so my activity has been only that run. There is no way that i've made another 4K during the day.

    The following steps may help:

    • Check that your personal information is accurate:
      • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > check and, if necessary, edit your information.

    • Close all open apps on your iPhone and restart both your iPhone and your watch:
      • On your iPhone, double-click on the Home button, then swipe up on each app preview to close it;
      • Turn both devices off together, then restart your iPhone first;
        • To turn your watch off: press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; drag it to turn off.
        • To turn it back on: press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
