Q: Repeated Kernel Panics

I've been dealing with repeated kernel panics that appear to be random in terms of which process appears to be triggering it as per the panic report (though I am definitely not experienced in reading those).

Panics started a few days ago: a few times over a few hours, then within five minutes of startup, then during or immediately after startup.

I couldn't even boot into the recovery volume to run disk utility; panic while waiting for startup.

I have 2GB factory and an 8GB DIMM in the machine. I swap out the ram, one by one, first going back to the factory 2x2GB dimms. Same repeated kernel panics regardless of which ram sticks were in.

On running disk utility on a internet recovery boot, I found irreparable disk errors on the startup volume. I erased the volume and reinstalled the OS. No panics for 8 hours or so. They then started up again, repeatedly.

I swapped out the hard drive to another that I have on hand with an older version of os x (lion): kernel panic.

About 20 minutes ago, I realized that I hadn't tried loading in safe mode. I put my original HDD back in and loaded in safe mode. No panic. I thought: maybe it's google drive. I disabled google drive from loading on startup and booted in normal mode. No panic. I loaded google drive manually. Still no panic.

However, I'm continuing to experience symptoms that were unseen before this panic issue started 3-4 days ago. Chrome windows are crashing repeatedly.

I'd appreciate what help you can give.

I think it's RAM related system crash. Replace RAM, not sure which RAM stick is/are bad, could solve the problem.

Your problem seems to be definitely hardware related, and is comparatively easy to solve:

You seem to have 5 variables, or areas where the problem could be, they are: RAM slot 1, RAM slot 2, 2GB RAM 1, 2GB RAM 2 and 8GB RAM.

    1. Take a pencil eraser and carefully clean the edges of all three RAM modules. Mark 2GB RAM 1 and 2. Do not touch these edges with your hand or any part of your body.
    2. Take only one RAM module and put it in the 1st slot. Test for stability not speed, as the Mac will be functioning slower than normal.
    3. Take the same RAM module and put it in the 2nd slot. Observe and note down your findings.
    4. Continue with the other RAM Modules in the same vain.
    5. If any of the three RAM module test fine in both slots, you know that both slots are fine.
    6. Mark the working Modules clearly. Observe the timings and note it down together.
    7. Continue the testing with only the working modules in combination with another with the same timing requirements.

Hello all and thank you for your comments. I ran memtest on each stick of ram installed alone and was quickly able to identify the 8GB mushkin as error ridden. I had discounted this entirely because at my genius bar appointment the tech told me that the RAM (10GB & 2GB installed at the time) was definitely not the culprit as it had passed his diagnostics tests.

Anyways, I've got a warranty replacement on the way for the ram, and I am very happy. I was halfway to buying a replacement laptop (would have been a Thinkpad because of the price) and realizing how much I depend on and prefer using my mac. I work a lot with PDF creation and file size optimization for my work, and the functionality from Preview (easily open multiple file types, reorder pages, write to pdf, run it through filters) seems like it requires full Adobe Acrobat to be matched under Windows. And then the thought of having to deal with Windows security risks...

So for now, at least, my mid-2010 13" Macbook Pro is still going strong and when I get the 8GB back will be running delay-free like a new machine. Thanks again everyone for pointing me to the RAM issue.
