Q: HELP! Compressor 4 Stuck Creating Blu-Ray @ 50% Complete

I've been trying to create a Blu-Ray from a self-contained mov, with chapters, exported from FCPX 10.2.3, WITHOUT any success.

Whether I try to burn a disc directly, or create an image to HDD, the result is the same.  Compressor creates the .ac3 and .264 files without issue, and switches to "Finishing: Burning Blu-Ray", and after about 9 minutes, hangs on 50% complete.

Currently, the batch has been almost 25 hrs at 50%

Activity Monitor CPU shows Compressor is bouncing from 0 to 13%, and Create Disc is holding at 0%.

Checking the Console logs and the only message related to compressor are:

2016-07-11 2:09:59.341 AM Compressor[606]: 02:09:59.340 WARNING:  140: This application, or a library it uses, is using the deprecated Carbon Component Manager for hosting Audio Units. Support for this will be removed in a future release. Also, this makes the host incompatible with version 3 audio units. Please transition to the API's in AudioComponent.h.

2016-07-11 2:09:59.605 AM Compressor[606]: *** Invalid attempt to set port maximum;  Ignored.

These messages are repeated verbatim several time.  There is nothing related to Create Disc

I have tried cancelling the job, and starting from scratch after a reboot; restarting a batch to reference the previously created .ac3 and .264 files, and the result is always the same.

I have Toast 10 with the Blu-ray plug-in installed as well, and Toast creates the Blu-Rays from the same MOV file without issue, except with Toast, the chapter markers are usually positioned to disc about 10 seconds earlier than their actual mov position.

Can anyone help me diagnose and fix this issue?  I have spent days searching with google for a resolution, but I have not found anything that helps.

Any help, suggestions or solutions would be gratefully received and appreciated.

TIA

If you have a menu background image, resize it so that it is within the resolution of the project.

Have you tried burning it (or writing a disk image) directly from FCP? Try a short section of your movie to see whether you get better results.

Apologies for the multiple posts.  Kept getting a message that support was offline, so I kept trying later.

    Thanks for the reply Russ.

Yes, I initially tried to create a DVD directly from FCP via share to Blu-Ray as well as Share to Compressor, which resulted in the same problem.  That is why I decided to go to the share to Master File and then try to create a Blu-Ray with Compressor.

For the Menu, I am using the included backgrounds.  I have tried Black and Street.  No joy there.

Any other suggestions?  I have Applecare for another 2 years.  Would they be able to help with this?

    TIA

To clarify, by image I meant a photo or graphics file that you put in the drop zone well.

Sorry, you have me confused.  There are no "drop zone" well on the default options, which is what I used.

I know you can add a background image or video via the Background button, and logo and title images from the respective buttons, but otherwise, there are no drop zone wells that I can see.

I did try to create an image directly from FCPX, and it worked this time (i hope).  I am currently burning a  disc with toast to verify it on my player.  The software player I tried on the MP played the image completely garbled and unwatchable.  Hopefully, the playback is just an issue with the software.  I will get back with the results in a bit.

    Thanks

You're totally correct; I misspoke calling it a drop zone well. It's a menu preview and you can add the image only through the Add Background dialog. Very often the cause of Create Disc failures is an incompatible image. And sometimes the problem is the size, with users adding very large resolution still images. Reducing the size to about the project size is the recommended fix.

Update: The Blu-Ray img created directly from FCPX seems to play back perfectly.  Which begs the questions, why this time, and why is Compressor locking up?

Any other suggestions on where I can trouble shoot this problem to make sure I can created discs and images dependably?

    TIA

Hello!  Last spring I had (and still have) the very same issue.  After a long thread on the subject, no solution was found.  I decided to try encoding from the Share facility in FCPX, using the same setting I wanted to use in Compressor, and I was able to create several Blu-ray .img files, including one of a 80 minutes long video.

Having to reimport already saved Master .mov files back into FCPX is a drag but manageable.

It would seem to imply that the bug is really within Compressor, as the underlying software that is doing the heavy lifting is working correctly with FCPX.
