Q: why does iCloud need my iPhone passcode for 2-factor authentication?

I have two-factor authentication turned on for my apple ID. When I change the passcode on my iPhone iCloud prompts me to enorter my new passcode to secure my iCloud data. So, is apple storing our passcode in the cloud on their servers? Anyone?

No.

The only way to remove a forgotten passcode is to erase the device. This would only be necessary if it did not exist anywhere else and only on the device.

I would think this is similar to OSX/Unix when you ask to do something that needs an Admin approval. That approval has nothing to do with the change itself, just proving the legitimate owner (or at least the passcode holder) is approving the change.

Thank you for the reply LACAllen, if it is just like an admin approval popup and all done locally only, then good. The pop up said it was "used to secure iCloud data" but that could be interpreted either way. Thanks again.
