The main preference for running Windows as the startup OS is system resource intensive apps. Which is mainly games that include a lot of 3D texturing and rapid frame rates.
VirtualBox is free. It's the most work to set up, but hey, it's free. There's also VMware and Parallels. Any of them should support a Windows environment, but read up on each vendor's site to be sure.
