If they do, no Mac OS X software can play or convert them.

Then Quicktime X came along & broke the concept of plugins. Their site claims it still works on 10.11, so you may want to confirm with them what it does since they do not have a free trial anymore. The pro versions can convert WMV's - I have a licence on an earlier OS X version.
There are also WMV player apps in the App store too.
