Q: How can multiple users with unique IDs share iTunes Match if the primary device is not in the room?

I Have a home Sonos speaker and iTunes Match on my computer but my husband can't use it unless my device is turned on and in the room.  If I also get Apple Music Family plan will that solve the problem?  Also can he upload new music into his iTunes that we can both share or does it all have to be on my computer?  Thanks

I can't promise I can help you Janice but just want to make sure I understand your issue before attempting to help:

1: Sonos is a wireless speaker setup so I'm unsure why your computer would have to be in the same room unless you have very weak WiFi - could you please clarify?

2: Apple Music (please be aware this is different and separate to iTunes Match) Family Membership allows up to six people to access their own individual Apple Music account on their own devices for a slightly increased price so I'm not sure this would solve your problem as your husband wouldn't really benefit if he didn't have his own device(s)?

3: Where would you husband be uploading this music to? If it was to a local computer in iTunes then only he would have access without setting up sharing. If it was to his own iCloud, that could be shared easily. If it was to your computer, this would be accessible by both of you regardless of Apple Id.

A little wooly I feel but hopefully with a bit more clarification, I can help you further.

Thank you r2thebizel for your reply.  Here are the answers to your questions:

    1.  I think the guy who set up our whole sound system used my iPad as the controller so it needs to be at least on our home wireless system.  My husband can use his iPhone and work the system until I leave the house with my iPad and then it doesn't work.

    2.  My husband does have his own devices so this might work.  I was not on the Family membership before and so it only supported using one Apple ID.

    3. He wants to use his laptop computer to upload his music.  We are on the same network so if we both do the iTunes Share, can he play my stuff and I can play his stuff?

    Thanks again for you advice.

Okay, thanks for that, here goes:

1: That makes more sense. You can have more than one controller however; my wife and I both have the Sonos Controller app on our iPhone's and it works a treat if that helps.

2: Sounds like Apple Music Family Membership would work here then although again, my wife has her Apple Music account with her Id and mine with my Id which works great for us so again, may be he would want his own subscription?

3: iTunes Home Sharing sounds like it would do the trick here as you're only interested in sharing on the same network.

    Hope that helps!

The Sonos system needs to know where the music files are located and you have a number of possibilities:

    1. Your music can be stored on a device and the music is streamed from that device. It sounds like that’s how your system is setup and why your iPad needs to be in the house for things to work. Assuming you have a home computer you could use it as the streaming device instead.
    2. Your music can be stored on a network attached storage (NAS) device. These can be special hard drive devices but you can connect a standard USB hard drive to many WiFi routers to create a NAS. This is the setup I used for a long time and it was a bit of a pain to setup but once it was working I quite liked it except for some occasional hiccups.
    3. You can subscribe to Apple Music and forget about networks and drives and everything else. Your music collection will be uploaded to Apple’s server and you’ll not only be able to listen to all your own music but you’ll also be able to listen to everything in Apple’s streaming collection.

Thanks so much for the help.  I think I am just going to have to go with the Apple music.  It is just easier.
