Q: Running a PPC off a USB

Hi I have gotten my hands on an old PPC.

When I boot it I get an folder with a question mark and one with a square face divided in half flashing on the monitor. I just want to use the Mac as a display for my shop so instead of going through the whole rigmarole of fixing it i thought i could just run it off a usb with OS installed and show pictures from there.

Any ideas / solutions. Good idea/bad idea.

Any feedback will be great

Thanks tons

Welcome Back! Looks like you have been gone a while.

The computer cannot recognize a USB drive or run a slide show without a valid operating system and at least a slide show application. The icon you see indicates the computer cannot find a valid MacOS system folder, either because is not installed or the hard drive is damaged of missing.

Also most PowerPC Macs cannot boot from a USB device. They relied on FireWire (IEEE 1394) connectivity for remote booting.

You may not be out of luck yet but we need to know more about this PowerMac to see if we can conjur up a workabout. Look all over the outside of the case until you find a serial number, typically on a label that has a bar code or two. (Note: if it has a door over the optical drive, some models have the serial # on the inside of the door. Now use this web site:

    http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/

to identify your exact model. Post back with the model and we will see if there are options, like installing Linux, for example.
