Q: problems with Multiport AV adapter

Gang,

 

I just got the Multiport AV adapter and I cannot get any USB3 hard drives to work with it.

 

I have the simpler USBC->USB SS adapter from Apple and others and that works, but not the AV adapter.

 

 

 

I could get audio devices to work fine?

 

Also does anyone know what the deal is with the downstream USBC port? Is that only for power (i.e the USB3 and Video are stripped from the connector)?

    Sorry did not know you posted twice... The MAVA needs 36ma, not the drive. You should be able to click on the drive and see what it is looking for. I would imagine the reason the MAVA says 1800ma is because of charging say an iPad or something that will ask for more than the standard 1A.

    That's not really possible, even SSD's require more than 36ma. No rotating disk ever has worked with that little of current.

    OK - I take your word for it.

    I checked the data with the drive connected to the DELL hub and directly to the MAVA.  Same result.

    Then what would be the next step? Measure the power reading connected to normal USB2 port on another Mac? i.e. a MB Air?

    I don't think this is a power issue from everything I have read so far. I think this is some compatibility problem. This should work no matter what.

    Why not give me your system details and let me snoop around. Do you have this years MacBook or is it the original like mine? Drive size, why not give me your About this Mac info.

    To ALL:

    Is there a way to revert to the previous version of the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter?

    The one I presently have is v. 2.33. It was the only upgrade posted  by Apple.

    I don't even see any difference in our SMC or boot rom image.

     

    Your on 10.11.5 with everything updated correct?

     

    Maybe we should focus on one thing at a time. Lets start with the monitor and the standard setup. MAVA into MB, Monitor HDMI, USB power hard drive. So you put the computer to sleep or have the option in System Preferences to sleep after x amount of time, whatever. You hit a key on the keyboard and the Monitor doesn't wake up.

     

    Try this... turn the monitor off then on and see if it comes back up. I would imagine that your monitor also has other inputs. Make sure when the MB is sleeping that the input is still the HDMI that the MAVA is attached to.

    Nelson,

     

    Is this a driver version or a hardware version? I don't think there is a driver for USB-C devices other than the basic one which by way of the connector knows what port the video is on and what port the USB3.1 is on.

     

    If it's a hardware version please point that out as I am sure when I bought my MB that I also bought the first MAVA and USC-C to USB3.1 adapters at the same time.

    Hi Gordon,

    this version 2.33 must a driver version that Apple posted for the USB-C Digital AV Multipart Adapter, can't remember the date.

    It shows in the System Report in the USB section when the adapter is connected to the MacBook

    Sorry that is the hardware version number and the only version of the USB-C that they have. Every USB device has to register all of it's details. One of them is a BCD version number. If there is a change in the hardware this number will change also. Apple makes a boat load of these MAVA devices for several interfaces including 30 pin IOS, Lightning, Thunderbolt etc...

     

    I will check my version on mine when I get home. But I would imagine that all of these are version 2.33. I will ask my Apple 3rd party person and see if there are any known issues or changes.

    You're correct, Gordon. It's the hardware update. Here are the instruction posted by Apple on June 14 2016 about the update. My MacBook started to fail right after this update. That was the reason for my question, can this update be reversed?

    Gordon, what can we do to let the people at Apple look into this. I'm sure a developer can dissect the script of that update and find where the problem is.

    You are by far more knowledgeable than me, it;s possible they will listen to you.

    I'm sure what's happening to my MacBook is happening to many out there.

    It looks like I have 1.58 and the OS is asking me to update to 2.33. But Nelson said his system started flaking after he updated the firmware in the MAVA.
