Q: Disk Drive keeps spitting out DVD's!

I'm on a brand new iMac machine, and I purchased a Patec 3.0 USB external disk drive from the computer.. it behaves rather oddly though..  I just got a spindle of 15, 4.7 GB DVD-RW's I would like to burn and use with the computer, however, the first time the disk was read, I tried to burn and there was an error - so I had the DVD ejected.. It says right on the disk-load tray, "RW" meaning rewriteable format compatible..

So I tried to insert a Blu-Ray disc movie, which this drive also supports Blu Ray, and it read the CD fine, showed up on my desktop!

I'm not sure why it's behaving this way.. subsequent inserts of any DVD disc just kept spitting it out over and over.. when I know for a fact DVDs work and have been used with this drive before..

Any help appreciated! I need to get this thing working asap.

Your third party DVD drive must be checked to see if it's compatible with the version of OS X installed on the computer. If it is and it still does not work then it may have a mechanical problem or the drive maybe sensitive to the brand of DVDs you are using. I would start by trying different brands to DVDs to eliminate the brand issue and if the problem persists then contact the seller of the DVD drive and arrange an exchange or refund.

Also, OS X has never supported Blue Ray so that may be your problem. If you are using Blue Ray media you need to get third party Blue Ray software to support what you are attempting to do. I would suggest contacting OWC (www.macsales.com) who has many OS X / Blue Ray solutions and see what they recommend for your needs.

    Good luck.

The drive allows Blu-Ray discs to be read and appear on the desktop, but in order to play INFORMATION from them, a separate application is needed, which I have downloaded.

A day later though and I still can't figure out why it is spitting out DVDs right now, specifically.

I'm going to look into a few of the things you mentioned, thank you for your advice.

Also - When I purchased my drive: Patec USB 3.0 external disk drive: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01CYFFSIW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF 8&psc=1

It said on the item description there it was compatible with iMac computers, but I'm not sure of the OSX version - I'm on OSX El Capitan version 10.11.5

Here's something odd, even when I unplugged the drive entirely, and plugged it into my laptop's USB port, still same issue, it is now spitting out DVD's and audio CD's almost immediately, so now I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the drive..

It says inside the disc tray, "Do not touch the lens" perhaps I may have touched it and broken something??
