Q: 12% drop in battery overnight..confused

Last night I closed lid on my MacBook and 12 hours later, it went from 100% to 88%.

I ran the EtreCheck and will post it here..trying to figure out what is happening.

Thank you

I'm having this same issue, brand new only 3 cycle count. My 2013 MacBook Air wouldn't even drop a percent the whole night asleep. Not sure if this is normal for the MacBook 2016 or not.

Guess no one really knows what the issue might be?

I logged on last night at 8:30pm...98% battery.

Shut lid, walked away, just turned it back on at 10am, and I'm, down to 88%.

I used to have a Surface Book but one of the main reasons I changed back to Apple was my memory of the amazing battery life when putting the MacAir to sleep...With the SurfaceBook, it would stay on and drain 15-20% overnight.

I am seeing this on my nice new MacBook and wondering what the **** I might be doing to have triggered this.

My MacAir, 2014, has exactly the same configuration as this new MacBook and when I ran identical battery tests, closing the  lid (not shutting down completely) MacAir at 8:30pm with 100% battery, and flipping it back open, it was STILL at 100% over the same period of time

Really confused now.  Any help?  Ideas?  Suggestions?

Is Power Nap enabled while on battery in the Energy Saver control panel?  That'll have the Mac check email, etc. even with the lid closed and it does seem to increase battery consumption.

Well, apparently there's no real answer at all.

Once again, dropped 10% from 8pm last night until 7:30am this am.

Wondering if Messages affects this...I get a lot of text messages and I do connect them with my laptop so wondering when I get them if it wakes the computer up whenever I get them.  Under Energy it does say App Nap but I did uncheck that option in Energy Saver so not sure why this would be happening?

Additionally, Chrome seems to be affecting it in some way.  I am considering removing it but really do need it for Extension I need for my email via Gmail.  I also don't want to just delete it and leave pieces behind that will continue to work in the background.

would REALLY appreciate some feedback and suggestions here..?

You should make sure that you dont have lots of programs running in the background as those could drain your battery and you should probably turn it off so that nothing causes the battery to go down.

Um....yeah...I actually do that from the very beginning of receiving this device.

AGAIN...@ 4:30pm last night I was at 47% battery.  Closed all programs, closed the lid, turned back on just now at 9:25am, and it was at 36%.

I am beginning to think this is a Chrome or Google Issue and/or Microsoft Office issue.  I turned off auto updated for Microsoft Office products last week...no change.  Only thing I can think of is removing Chrome all together and seeing what happens when I do that.

Again, I'm attaching the EtreCheck that was recommended and would appreciate ANY comments from those who understand this as to what, if anything, I am doing or not doing that can affect this 10% drop in battery over a 12 hour period when my MacBook is sleeping.  One of the BIG reasons I switched from Surface Book to Mac was the fact I could sleep a Mac and not worry about battery.  If this isn't the case, I would seriously consider going back to my SB now that I wiped it.

So I found this link on another forum and perhaps, this is what is causing my issues:

Wake on Excessive Wake drains battery on sleep

Problem is, there really was no solution to the issue.  It keeps draining between 8-10% overnight when I close lid and put machine to sleep.

ONE NEW NOTE - There are more than 70 "idle wake ups" listed when I look at activity monitor and it is listed under Kernel_tasks.  I am assuming this is normal but perhaps not.  CPU Time 17:58 and Idle Wake Ups 433 threads.  Not sure if that even matters or not.

Anyone have any experience with this issue at all to this point?  I really could use some help here.

Well, one last ditch effort to get anyone to respond here with suggestions..

    Same issue for me.

One thing I noticed..when I am at home, it seems to drain 8-12% overnight.  Funny thing is, when I am on the road, I don't have that particular issue.  I am going to try and test again tonight from hotel to confirm.

If in fact it has something to do with my router (I have regular wifi and 5G that cast signal constantly), has anyone else had similar issues?

When the computer is closed but not turned off, it is still consuming power.

There are two phenomenons occurring simultaneously:

    1) self discharge of the battery (which at room temperature is 1% per day)

    2) the components of the system are still consuming some power

you can see the difference by shutting the computer down and leaving it overnight (noting the capacity) then power it up and not the capacity as soon as it becomes available

Why not leave the computer plugged into the AC outlet when you are near one?  The saves the battery.

I spent 6.5 years working gas gauge ICs which live inside the Lion battery of your computer and I can tell you running on AC power when available will extend the useful life time of the battery-- because you are using it less.

    consider the battery like this:

    - when AC power is available use the AC power

    - when AC power is NOT available run on the battery if you must

My computer is a 2012 model.

Thanks for the information Wayne.  Explains a few things.

However, I am trying to determine why I am losing battery overnight from 100% to 88% when the computer is sleeping vs just shutting it off.  One of the great features of Mac is ability to open it up and go right to work vs powering it up.  I power down completely twice each week.

I just want to better understand the issue.

I noticed that when I am not at my home WIFI this doesn't seem to happen.  I have Verizon FIOS High Speed and it is lightening fast with no issues but concerned something is causing my Mac to link to it and then, dropping the connection and reconnecting.

I also have 5G on the router active and thinking it is hopping between the two?  Want to prevent that I would think. Could be the type of router Verizon supplies as well.

I'm still with you spasel. I don't think anyone understands and maybe is just us that is having this issue. I've been a Mac user since forever. This has been my first laptop in a long time that is dropping this much battery power over night. I don't think it's normal, especially a brand new MacBook.

I'm going to try what you suggested and shut off my wifi and then close the lid tonight and see if that helps. If it does help, then something is going on that shouldn't be. Maybe I'll put the machine to sleep and do a packet capture of the MacBook while it's asleep and see what is going on. I'll have to wait to do a capture, I'm traveling and only have one machine with my right now.

Pretty simple, but not at the same time; go recovery mode, when it comes to your options screen(4 of them --Reinstall OSX, Get help online, disk utility, one more I drew a blank on). Go to utilities at the top and select terminal.

    ---

    dscacheutil -flushcache

    purge

    echo $PATH

    ---

Regarding the above, copy -paste path, and if the above commands dont work without using sudo (if so, one thing you can do is run 'Su -', should afford root privileges for time being)

    then

    ----

    run diskutil list

    ---_

    also, echo $PYTHONPATH

copu opu and paste the above.

Apple Support has been absolutely worthless and ignorant, both in each of these contexts: store/online/phone.

Ome employee played the company line of "out of warranty," when this issue i have and may be yours too, is anything but a warranty issue, and is completely their fault.

in regards to iPhone/iPad if you have them; go to general settings, and then about the device; write down and type up, do the same with your make as well as going to system information. Then find diagnostics and usage information, go to diagnosticss and relay a brief summary of what you see. Repeat the above copy/paste or type up.

DO you have Adobe Creative cloud? And/or MicroSoft Office? Spotify?

anyone else can do this too; and I bet your computer and phones overheat for no reason, or way too hot for among o applications being used.

When I do run the EtreCheck, Office is one of the daemens that is opening.

I do not have Spotify or the others you mentioned but I do have Office...I also have Chrome.  These are the ones that I am questioning:

    Launch Daemons:

        [loaded]    com.microsoft.autoupdate.helpertool.plist (2016-05-28) [Support]

        [loaded]    com.microsoft.office.licensingV2.helper.plist (2016-05-06) [Support]

    User Launch Agents:

        [loaded]    com.google.keystone.agent.plist (2016-07-13) [Support]

But in the end, I am starting to believe it's the way my MacBook is connecting to my home router.  This battery drain is not happening when I am away from my home.

When I do get back, I'm going to turn wifi off before closing lid and see if that makes a difference.  I suspect that it will and this will be something I will have to do each time, despite it being a pain in the ***.
