Q: 2006 Macbook Stuck on Apple Logo & Shuts Down

About 6 months ago, my admittedly obsolete 2006 MacBook that's worse-for-wear started malfunctioning. It would get stuck on the Apple logo screen. I was able to boot it in safe mode and fixed the problem. However, a month ago, the problem started back up and I'm unable to reboot using safe mode for some reason.

 

Here are just the facts:

 

- When I press the power button, the start up chime doesn't happen.

- The Apple logo and circling thingy both appear but the MacBook shuts down after a few minutes.

- The only thing I have plugged is the charger.

 

The MacBook isn't my main computer and I've never placed much stress on it.

I've tried rebooting in safe mode a couple of times but am unable to do so. Although I think at this point I'll probably have to take it in to a shop, I'm really hoping that someone can give me some simple advice on how to resolve the issue.

    Hi. Take a look at the steps suggested by Apple in this article:

    If your Mac won't turn on - Apple Support


    Try Safe Boot:


    - Shut down your Mac

    - Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button

    - Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key

    - Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign

    - After your Mac boots up, restart it as you usually do.


    If this doesn't help, follow the instructions below:


    - Shut down your Mac

    - Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button

    - Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key

    - Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign

    - Once you see Desktop, start a Disk Utility scan to detect and repair file system errors (don't forget to choose your main hard drive)

    - Click on Verify Disk and then, if asked to fix problems, on Repair Disk

    - After this, click on Verify Disk Permissions and then on Repair Disk Permissions

    - After the process is finished, shut down your Mac and turn it back on after about 30 seconds

    Yeah, before posting about this issue, I had already tried booting in safe mode a few times. But for whatever reason(s) my MacBook won't even boot in safe mode. Also, there's no startup tone. And even after I press and hold shift after when I think the startup tone would've happened, safe mode never initializes.

    Looks like your hard drive has failed or its on its way. If you still have your original install disks you can run AHT located on disk 2.

    Using Apple Hardware Test

    1. Shut down your computer. Then, press the power button to turn it back on.
    2. Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears.
    3. It takes a minute or so for AHT to start up and inspect your hardware configuration. While this is taking place, an icon appears on the screen:
    4. When the process is complete, select your language and click the right arrow. If you aren't using a mouse, you can use the up and down arrows to select a language and then press the Return key.
    5. The AHT console appears. You can choose which sort of test or tests to perform:
      • To perform all of the basic tests, click the Test button or press the "T" key or the Return key.
      • To perform a more thorough diagnostic test, select the "Perform extended testing" checkbox under the Test button before you click the Test button.
      Note: Your test results will appear in the window in the bottom-right of the console.
    6. To exit AHT, click Restart or Shut Down at the bottom of the window.

    Sorry, but I forgot to mention that the optical drive has never worked. So unfortunately, I can't do any kind of AHT.

    I think I'm making progress.

    I just tried pressing and holding option, command, P and R after turning my macbook on and the startup chime played. Before, the startup chime didn't play at all. So, I'm taking that as a sign of hope.
