Q: Where do I find the Bonjour service I need for home sharing from a Windows 7 desktop?

I just downloaded iTunes 12.4.1, and apparently I need Bonjour services for Home Sharing.  Where do I find that service?

Windows 7 desktop, Windows 7

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. Start with Install missing components.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

Historically the iTunes installer has installed this along with iTunes itself. I say historically because it is so long ago since I did a fresh install of iTunes on a fresh Windows machine so it might be the case this has changed.

However there is still a separate Bonjour installer you could run just in case this is needed. This is more typically used to access Bonjour advertised printers. See - Download Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2

This basically solved part of the problem.  I was able to install Bonjour with a fresh install of iTunes.

The process was a pain as some of the apple pieces did not want to uninstall.

My main objective was to set up home sharing of my itunes music library, which is on a Windows 7 machine, so that

the iOS devices in the household can access the music.  So itunes is up and running, Bonjour appears to be active, there is only one network which everyone uses.  However there is no indication that the iOS devices are aware of the library.

Are you using the Remote app by Apple on the iOS devices?

The devices I have that I want to Home Share with follow.  None will connect to the library.

    MacPro laptop

    Apple TV

    iPad

    iPhone

    iPod Touch

I used to be able to sync the mobile devices to the library.  Now iTunes becomes unresponsive when I plug the device into a USB port, followed by a message that iTunes sees the device, but cannot recognize it.

The mobile devices have a music app which I understand is supposed to show a 'shared library' when connected properly.  One of them has an iTunes app which appears to be geared toward buying music from the iTunes Store, not managing an existing library.

If your iOS device isn't showing in iTunes try the following:

    1. Open Control Panel > Device Manager
    2. Plug in your device
    3. Locate Universal Serial Bus Controllers > Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.
It is also possible the device may show under Imaging Devices, Portable Devices or Other Devices or as an MTB USB Device.
    4. Right-click and select Update Driver Software...
    5. Click Browse my computer for driver software
    6. Browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers or
                      C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
    7. Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
    8. Click Apple Mobile Device USB Driver
    9. Click Next, then Close and exit Device Manager

For step 3 above, open the device manager. Expand any of these sections that are listed.

    • Universal Serial Bus Controllers
    • Imaging Devices
    • Portable Devices
    • Other Devices

Connect the device. You should hear the telltale sound of Windows device connection and one section should gain a new entry. That should be your device. It may not be labelled correctly at this stage. If you don't hear a noise suspect a damaged cable.

Or try If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support which is Apple's version of the advice above.

Failing that try a full tear down and rebuild of iTunes as set out in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. 64-bit users could also try the alternate Download iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) build which is sometimes a useful workaround.

Or lastly try rolling back to the last build of iTunes that worked for you. See iTunes installers for download links. If you're rolling back from 12.4.0.119 to 12.3.3.17 or 12.3.2.35, for example, then you'll also need to roll back the library database using the method described in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash. The tip includes suggestions for reintroducing any recent purchases so at worst you lose a few playcounts and/or a recently created playlist.

I am uninstalling all things iTunes.  However cannot complete deletion of Bonjour folder because it is in use by

Nv StreamUserAgent.exe and Vz DetectAgent.exe.  Also in use in the Apple Common Files folder is Shell Streams64.dll

How do I complete the deletion of these folders?

Read the notes below the second box. try stopping services, reboot into safe mode, or the unlocker utility.

I can't find the items I need on the list of services, still trying for safe mode....F8 doesn't seem to do the trick and the link to unlocker leads to a security error and a warning from Google to stay away.

As I think back the upgrades for iTunes have failed to load automatically for a while now.  I'm instructed to do it manually which I may or may not have done because as far as I was concerned iTunes worked fine.

How far back should I go when I attempt to reinstall ?  Everything seemed to work great 2 years ago

I'd recommend installing the current version if possible. If it really won't reinstall try the next most recent build.. Rolling your library back to one compatible with an older version causes a different set of problems.

Well I finally got things cleaned up and reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.

    1. During the install I got an install error 'could not open key'  I clicked Ok and it seem to start rolling back

but it turned around and completed the install

    2. There is a significant time delay to open edit/preferences..2-3 minutes during which time nothing is responsive.

    3.  I attached my mobile devices, the drivers loaded, my system recognized the devices, iTunes did not and froze up until I removed the mobile devices.

    4.  Home Sharing is turned on but none of the Apple devices on my network recognize the iTunes library.  They do however recognize that the same network is connected to the internet.

So the bottom line is that iTunes is not what it used to be.  Any suggestions ?

    1. There is a section in the user tip on this error. The install may not have completed successfully. Try repairing Bonjour from the programs and features control panel.

    2. Try holding ctrl+shift when launching iTunes which opens it in safe mode. Doing this once may have a positive impact on subsequent launches. Also try right-clicking on the shortcut and using Run as administrator. Desktop or task bar short cuts may be out of date.
    3. Advice on reinstalling/updating drivers as given earlier.
    4. Check home sharing settings. If they appear to be set correctly turn off, then turn back on again.
