What exact models are each of your AirPort base stations? Are you extending using a wireless connection between them? Where is the extending base station located in respect to the base station that is being extended?

Was this working before and has now having issues or has this always been a problem since you set it up?

YYes both are wireless base stations. We are using wireless connections. My main base station is in the basement and extension on first floor. main base station has worked all the time but only extension has had issues and unable to stay on the network. Not sure if I need to change set up or otherwise.

We still need to know the model numbers of each of your Apple base stations.

The issue with the extension may be its placement. It can only extend the network at the bandwidth that it receives. Also if it cannot get a strong enough signal from the station that it is extending, it may lose connectivity to it.

Check out the following AirPort User tip on optimum base station placement for an extended Wi-Fi network. Please post back your results. You may find that by simply moving either base station may resolve this issue.
