Q: Photo file name missing after importing

We just completed importing 800 photos into our fresh install of iPhoto 11 and almost half of the photos are missing the file name. Some names show up (but not all) in the caption under the photo in my all photo view. When I select a specific photo and open it and the info panel the name is also blank. However, when I select the option to locate original in finder it does open and point to the correct file. I also have Aperture 3 and performed the same import last night and all file names were showing fine. Is anyone else having this problem in iPhoto 11 exclusively? Any ideas if it is something on my side or a bug in the program?

Thanks!

I have recently spoken with an Apple Support person and they confirmed that displaying the Image file name was a feature present in iPhoto, but was lost in the updated Photo.  Their suggestion was to send feedback to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback.  He said this is the most effective way to get results, and the more of us that do this the better the chance we have of seeing this feature back.  This was my feedback to Apple:

"Thank you for the last Photo update... I appreciate some of the improved features that have been made to it.

I would however like to note that the absence of the file names appearing underneath the image is sorely missed.  I find this information very useful as I receive photos from other sources and it helps me to identify the ownership of the photos.  I'm kind of lost without it now.

While the screen may look tidier and friendlier to some, it would be nice to know that this feature could be made available as an option to View (Display Image File Name).

Could I make this as a suggestion for your next update?"

iPhoto used the filenames as a default title to display below the thumbnails, if no title had been assigned. Photo for Mac does only display titles below the thumbnails, if a title had been assigned.

As a work-around:  We posted  a few Apple Scripts in the user tip section to change the title of a photo to the file name - have a look:

Photos will show the title below the thumbnails, if you enable the titles  in the menu: View > Metadata.

With the assistance of an Apple Support specialist I did go to View > Metadata and all options were ticked.  The file name still does not appear.  I have seen your Script solution, however it's too complicated for me.  I wouldn't know where to start.  But thanks for your response Leonie.

If you do not know how to read AppleScripts, don't run them. It is risky to run scripts downloaded from the internet that we cannot check to be sure if they are harmless.

If you open an info panel for a photo in Photos you can manually copy and paste the filename from the filename field to the title field, but it would be a lot of work.

You can download a compiled version of the script(s) as an application from this tutorial site: P01 - Applescripts from Photos’ User Tips Compiled as Applications.

Then all you need to do is select the photos in the library you want to have the file name placed under the thumbnails and double click on the application.    NOTE:  The first time you run the app you should Control (right) - click on it and select Open from the contextual menu.

To test the script/app create a new, test library, import a few photos and run the script/app on them.
